Is there a shortage or are places just not ordering. The problem could also be my area though arizona is relaxed when it comes to gun laws

Shortage all over the US in both ammo and firearms given the Obama administration's new attack on 2nd Amendment Rights.

I've been at Academy and other stores in the Houston are and the selves are bare when it comes to popular calibers.

I've got about a 800 rounds of 9mm left and I'm starting to save the brass, just in case I have to start reloading later. I don't know how long this hysteria is going to last.

One guy was buying a .40 cal pistol and the clerck warned him that they didn't have any ammo for the gun. He was obviously a clueless newbie because went ahead and bought the gun after the clerk told him he could probably get some at Walmart. I'm guessing he has a real expensive hammer now.

Here an ad from Texas Gun Trader, talk about gouging.

The ammo shortage started with all the "Doomsday Prepers" hording ammo. It was the escalated by the re-election of Obama. Finally pushed over the cliff with the Sandy Hook shootings and the call for more gun control. A lot of people fear that legislation maybe include high ammunition taxes as a way to influence people away from gun ownership. Even 22 rimfire is in short supply.

It's so bad I finally broke down and ordered my first reloading setup. Unfortunately I'm not the only one and there's a 3 week processing time for the orders. I'm also waiting for my background check to get done so I can go pick up the two W. German Sigs I bought last week. There's no waiting period here but so many people are buying guns that there's a week-long backlog of checks.

I'm starting to wonder if maybe the anti's keep throwing out all these gun-control bills knowing they won't pass but as a way to artificially drive up prices.

Funny how many of these threads are, and how nearly all are started by people with low post count/recent join date. The people who were here just over 4 years ago saw this happen with Big O's first election. It lasted, some places, almost two years.

Why would they care about prices? They aren't making a killing off the profits.

Hhmmm....No the ammunition shortage didn't start with the "Doomsday Preppers" hoarding ammo! This past year departments & agencies of the Federal government purchased 1.5 Billion rounds of ammunition. These purchases were not made by the military. Said 1.5 Billion Rounds purchased were in excess of the agencies/department's usual purchases. The many Federal departments/agencies that procured this ammunition included Homeland Security, the EPA, and the Social Security Administration.

Start with blaming the Federal government for the shortages, factor in the fact that the United States of America is a post-industrial society (i.e., we no longer have an abundance of manufacturing capability), and the large #'s of Americans (which I suppose could include a few Doomsday Preppers) who may be preparing for war---that's what's responsible for the ammunition shortage. [Leastways, that's my opinion.]

I can't find 9mm ammunition either, but then I don't own firearms or ammunition anymore.--Patrice

There has been a progressive shortage of ammo since the invasion of Iraq. The ammo makers have been filling government contracts and that takes away production capacity from civilian contracts and calibers. When you have two or three wars running for years, there is going to be ammo shortages.

I can find the guns but not the ammo. I just purchased a springfield XD 9mm and got 50 rounds of ammo when I bought it. However, that is all they had and the put it back for those that buy the gun. Everywhere else is out of ammo. Fortunately my bro has a lot of 9mm ammo so I don't have an expensive hammer as someone said.. lol

that being said, there appears to be several places online that still have ammo if you're really that in need. I plan on ordering a some boxes tonight or tommorow.

We've got 40 available here.

I might have to buy a 40 just to have something to shoot. Then sell it once the 9mm comes back in stock!

lol got lucky last two weeks and got some 9mm from LGS. It pays to stop by the gun shop every other day. @OP, do you live in a cave or some sort of village were you don't leave but once or twice a year? Because this crazy has been going on for about a month. Gun shops are getting small shipments of handguns but no Glocks, small compact 9mm/45acp/40cal. 10 Rounds or less, nothing big.

The Media nowadays after the few shootings last year is and seems attuned to publish any gun-related incident in a unthoughtful and harsh manner no matter how petty or immature it is. Because some and possibly a great majority of newsmen don't know anything and are very inexperienced with the word gun and know little about it and think that the gun did the crime and not the person. Plus every time the news keeps putting up extra news to deliberately or unknowingly so harass the gun owner population. It gets me ****** at how dumb people respond to the news like 'oh yeah thats crazy they got shot so now we got to do something lawfull to lawfull gun owners about this, its so bad ' I hate that ****. I know it makes ammo and guns harder to get stirring peoples emotions up with the bull being plastered at msn every morining I wake up.

Here at my LGS in Washington state, there were 30+ boxes of 9mm from Sellior andBellot for 11.99 and we had 20+ boxes of American Eagle at 14.99. Walmarts however are cleaned out. I have a hard time finding gold dots and HST but there is a lot of range ammo.

I bought 1000 Berry's 124 grain bullets last Thanksgiving and I now have them all loaded up....so I am good to go.

I also have 1000 40 cal rounds loaded up, bought the bullets last Thanksgiving as well.

No shortage here.

I got some at Wally world two days back...They just started a 3 box limit so 9mm, 45 and even some 22 is starting to become available. Guy at the store told me that LGS folks were "watching" ammo arrivals (probably tipping someone in stock) and buying up everything from them as soon as it came in.

My area is the complete opposite. Its easy to find self defense ammo in most calibers but range ammo is rare. I've had my Glock 21 almost a month and have only been able to put 50 rounds through it because I don't want to pay the high price of self defense ammo just for some range time.

Please don't buy into this nonsense. It is only passed along to promote fear and conspiracy crap. The government recently renewed its ammunition purchasing contracts. These contracts are to lock in a price for ammunition for UP TO a certain amount of ammo. They haven't taken possession of all that ammo nor is it likely they will. This is way it has always been done. Well at least for the last 20 years I've worked in the military and the federal government. There is nothing to be read into the purchasing contract because it is no different than any other purchasing contract for many, many years.
