1911 ejecting
I've got an old 1911A1 ex-service pistol. Is there an easy way to get those flying cases to land in the same general area without having them bounce of my forehead first?

It can be done, but I don't know exactly how easy it is to make this happen. This is what I did to an old Army parts gun.
1. Buy a copy of Jerry Kuhnhassen's book on the 1911. 2. Lower the ejection port and bevel the inside edge. 3. Install a longer ejector. 4. Tune the extractor for proper tension and hook angles. 5. Tune the ejector angles. Before doing these things my military 1911 would fling brass to the front right, to the right, to the rear right, straight up or straight back with no rhyme or reason. |

Before working on the slide and/or frame try adjusting the extractor so it will hold a laoded cartridge against the breech face against the force of gravity. Stop by the 1911 Forum and there are instructions on how to do it.

All new springs and then, if needed, per Stans suggestions #1 and #4.

Nothin wrong with the port. Properly tuned extractor and ejector will put em where they belong. Sam |

Guys "I've got an old 1911A1 ex-service pistol. " How about a new recoil spring first at least.

Agreed, a spring transplant would be in order too. Wolff. Factory would be 16#, get a replacement firing pin spring at the same time (Wolff packages them together).
Then tune the extractor.

If the extractor isn't the problem, you can carefully stone the ejector angle so it flips the empty right through the port. Enlarging the port is not the real solution, just a way of avoiding the right fix.

Dear Sir:
In addition to the things the other smiths have said I always, when I'm lowering the ejection port down to .475, go ahead and mill with 1/2" mill the forward edge of the front port (towards the muzzle) .050 further so if you want to clear a harball live round. Hackathorn said, "It should be done on every 45." Many new ones have this already done. Thanks Harry |

Thanks Harry. I am not a Factory Gun Guy and the only 1911 Colt I own was made in 1954. I did not even look at them at the Shot Show. Waste of time for me.
