GP100-Strictly HD Ammo
Using a 4" Ruger GP100 for strictly home defense and assuming that you would probably be firing from a small- dark bedroom so taking into consideration muzzle flash and report what specific commercial ammo would you recommend that would not completely disorient you and would allow for follow up shots. I really don't want a flash bang grenade scenario so while the .357 125gr sjhp is great it's not ideal for this scenario. Is there a .357 round that would do the job or would a .38 +p be necessary.

FBI Load: 158-gr LSWCHP +P. Way easy to shoot and keep on target with this gun.
No comparison between .38s and even reduced pressure .357s. |

You should take a look at Corbon 125 grain DPX ammo. http://www.dakotaammo.net/products/corbon/dpx.htm
This is my carry load. It is a reduced recoil, reduced flash load. It is advertised at 1300 fps out of a 4 inch gun although some tests show a little less. I personally tested it at night versus a Winchester 158 grain JSP. The Winchester looked like a flashbang going off. I could still see to shoot but it was very bright. The DPX produced substantially less flash. I was very happy with the reduced flash. Here is a good write up on it: http://www.hipowersandhandguns.com/C...DPX%20Ammo.htm |

Sounds like the perfect job for the Speer .357 135 grain Short Barrel Gold Dot.

The .327mag...
What I like about the .327 mag. in an SP101 is that I can also load it with
.32 H&R or .32 Long. In some scenarios where one is worried about noise, flash and overpenetration - the .32 starts to look like a good choice. The .32 H&R overlaps .38 performance and the .327mag exceeds .38+P performance... Then consider three double-taps from a .32 SP101 six shooter as opposed to a .38SP101 five shooter... |

I dont have much experience with different ammo. But with your description about muzzle flash and not disorienting your self. I think a jacketed hollow point .38+P is gona be the way to go.
What kind? I have no clue. let us know what you decide and how it works... (*on targets of course*) |

I've been pretty happy with Black Hills 125 Grain JHP's in .357 Magnum.
They don't seem to be a problem for me, even at "Night Shoots". The Corbox .357 Magnum DPX load is another good one, and would be my choice if I didn't have the Black Hills ammo. Biker |

Out of curiosity, I've fired a couple different .357 loads in the dark. The heavier 140grn+ loads typically have less flash than the lighter ones.
