Sen. Reid Proposes Sandy Hook Legislation

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d113:s.2:

S.2 - A bill to reduce violence and protect the citizens of the United States

According to the Congressional Record remarks, the purpose of the bill is to promote "common sense proposals to reduce gun violence" among other things. The 15 co-sponsors are solid anti-gun types. The text of the bill is not yet available; but when available, it should tell us a lot about what kind of support we can expect from Senate Majority Leader Reid (NRA B+ rated).

COSPONSORS(15),

Sen Blumenthal, Richard [CT] - 1/22/2013
Sen Boxer, Barbara [CA] - 1/22/2013
Sen Brown, Sherrod [OH] - 1/22/2013
Sen Cantwell, Maria [WA] - 1/22/2013
Sen Coons, Christopher A. [DE] - 1/22/2013
Sen Durbin, Richard [IL] - 1/22/2013
Sen Feinstein, Dianne [CA] - 1/22/2013
Sen Hirono, Mazie K. [HI] - 1/22/2013
Sen Lautenberg, Frank R. [NJ] - 1/22/2013
Sen Levin, Carl [MI] - 1/22/2013
Sen Menendez, Robert [NJ] - 1/22/2013
Sen Murphy, Christopher S. [CT] - 1/22/2013
Sen Rockefeller, John D., IV [WV] - 1/22/2013
Sen Schatz, Brian [HI] - 1/22/2013
Sen Schumer, Charles E. [NY] - 1/22/2013

The usual. Although Lautenburg might be out of a job next election.

Quote:
While Lautenberg may be suggesting he could give Booker a spanking in a primary, a new Quinnipiac poll suggests otherwise. The poll, conducted January 15 - 21, shows that if the primary were held today, 51 percent of registered Democrats would vote for Booker while just 30 percent would vote for Lautenberg.
ETA: Although Booker is not any better. He wants to pound guns into bling:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/0...n_2504135.html

Quote:
Newark, N.J., Mayor Cory Booker announced Thursday a new twist to his gun buyback initiative: melting down weapons and turning them into jewelry bearing an engraving of the gun's serial number.

Booker introduced the jewelry line, called "The Caliber Collection," during an appearance on MSNBC's "The Rachel Maddow Show." The mayor said he intends to use the jewelry line as an "instrument for more buybacks, an instrument of peace."
How to keep the hoods in NJ from mugging people for the bling was not addressed.

I am shocked to see someone from both WV and OH on that list, I always thought of both of those states as very Pro 2a; though I know through my brother in law you have anti enclaves in Ohio like Cleveland and Cincinnati

Fascinating. Reid is taking the bull by the horns. That could be a good thing under the circumstances, unless Harry has turned the corner. Watching this intently.

The other senator from WV is expected to come out in favor. This is a complete reversal of his stated stance.

We don't even know what's in it yet. Predicting anything based off of legislation we don't know the content of is a little early. Now give the co-sponsors we have an idea of what the end result desired is, but for all we know, this is a bone to throw the people who would vote against them for focusing on gun control and gun control only. This could be a mental health initiative specifically designed to die in committee they can point to as their attempt at comprehensive plans and proof they didn't solely target the guns.

WV - maybe - but - Ohio until very recently was very anti.

Glenn, Metzenbaum, Voinivitch, Kucinich.....they were in the same league as Shumer, Feinstein, Boxer.

Sherrod Brown is a perfect fit for the others on that list.

What a surprise (not) to see both of Connecticut's senators on the list.

Anyone know when the text of the bill, or at least a summary, might be available?

It goes to the Government Printing Office, after which it's transcribed and posted.

According to the webpage that tells you the text isn't available yet, usually up to 24 hours, though exceptionally large bills or exceptionally busy days can result in a delay longer than 24 hours.

Even here in AZ our politicians have been making noises about supporting universal background checks so I'd give that the greatest chance of passing.

Take another look at that list. They all have something in common.

Can't get the video to play in two different browsers. Possibly overwhelmed by number of viewers?

I am pretty sure Harry got tired of them and Obama jawing about it and said if you want it up for a vote lets do it....If you don't like what happens after that talk to the hand.

It will be time to see who are our friends and who is not. The 900 lb gorilla will be making calls.

Harry voted against extending the last AWB

Moby: That looks like the same old video from right after the shooting so I'm not sure what you think it proves.

Moby, your video is from December 15th... Remind me, what day was the shooting? I see that others have noted what I noted.

I really wish you conspiracy types would proofread your own documentation!

While not the text of the bill itself, I did find what appears to be the transcript of Reid introducing it.

Quote:
(1) support the efforts of the President of the United States to reduce violence in the United States;

(2) promote common-sense proposals for preventing gun violence;

(3) provide law enforcement officers with the tools necessary to combat violent crime and protect communities, and protect themselves;

(4) ensure children can attend school free from the threat of violence;

(5) support States and local districts to ensure schools have the safe and successful learning conditions in which all students can excel;

(6) provide tools for identifying individuals that pose a threat to themselves or others, so they can receive appropriate assistance;

(7) keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of criminals and individuals who are not lawfully authorized to possess them;

(8) promote information-sharing that will facilitate the early identification of threats to public safety;

(9) mitigate the effects of violence by promoting preparedness;

(10) provide training for educational professionals, health providers, and others to recognize indicators of the potential for violent behavior;

(11) examine whether there is a connection between violent media and violent behavior;

(12) enable the collection, study, and publication of relevant research; and

(13) expand access to mental health services, with a focus on children and young adults.
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/...r113kR1k6d:e0:

Points 1, 2, and 7 could be troubling depending on their specifics, but they could also be nothing more than vague political maneuvering too. The lack of anything specifically on gun control may actually be a good sign given Reid's background on the issue and that he seems to be much more specific in his proposals on mental health and violent media. Of course, we'll have to wait for the actual text of the bill to know for sure.
