I am looking for a C96 Mauser Handgun:

Anyone know where to get them and how much they are running right now??
Thanks!

This is going to be my grandpa's 90 year-old BD gift. It doesn't have to be operational, but it's always better if I can shoot it!

It's going to run you over a thousand dollars, and the barrels are commonly ruined

Alot of rather worn ones were imported like 10-15 years ago(?) from China. Most had shot out bores and there are still companies that will reline the bores. Now that the supply is long dried up, you will have to search willy nilly on the gun auction sites, gun shows, etc. to see if you still can find one. Otherwise excellent examples in collector condition are very expensive items, probably something that you would find selling at a firearms or militaria auction house. It would make for a pretty extravegent gift, you are gonna probably pay a huge sum for one, unless you find an unrestored Chinese example that someone has been setting on. And that might not be a particularly nice looking one. As I recall they were no finish and varying in wear and probably pitting.

Even though I love the darned thing dearly, I simply won't shoot a C96 Mauser anymore.

I've heard one to many stories about cracked bolts to feel comfortable shooting one.

If the bolt shears, it's coming straight back into your face.

How about an Airsoft version? It would be much less money, and your Grandfather could shoot it indoors.

Is a veritable Chinese puzzle of interlocking parts. The gun has one pin, and one screw (grips). If something breaks, yes the bolt can come straight back out of the gun. The Chinese copies are not as well done (generally) as the original Mausers, although one sometimes finds them in better condition finish wise. They are generally newer.

Considering that the C 96s are rather elderly guns now, and many have not had the best of care and maintenance, I would be leary of shooting one, without having had all the internals intensly checked for cracks and wear. A very cool looking gun (today), very recognisable. Even used in a galaxy far far away, long, long ago (Han Solo's blaster)!

Not so well thought of back in the day, at least, not by everyone. The Germans called it the "kuhfuss pistole" because it was "as ugly as a cow's foot"! The nickname "Broomhandle" is only used by English speakers.

Churchill loved his, because it saved his butt! Very understandable, actually.

You're reading something into my message that I NEVER said.

Did I say that I have ever heard of or seen a Mauser bolt that had sheared off?

No.

What I said is that I have heard of (and seen) more than a few Mauser bolts that are CRACKED, which could, possibly, lead to a bolt shearing off and coming right back into the shooter's face, and that's really something that I don't wish to experience.

The overall design of the handgun is strong and sound. However, the composition of materials, ESPECIALLY in the Chinese copies, can be suspect to the maximum at times.

Its actually bolt stops and barrel extensions that cause the problems but Mike is correct in the consequences. However, a thread that cannot get Winston Churchills name right is a disgrace.

Heck, I bought one because they are just too cool-and I'm a revolver guy!

I won a full length Broomhandle with sharp markings and shot out bore for $355 off Gunbroker. Added a set of Wolf springs. Bought original bolt, firing pin, bolt stop and extractor from SKS Man, got the bore relined at Redmans Rifling and bought an original stock holster off EBay along with a repro leather hanger. Then 500 rounds of new Privi Partizan 7.63 Mauser ammo.

Thousand bucks by the time I was done, but it runs like a sewing machine and shoots excellent. I never see anyone else with one at the range and people often comment on what a cool "Luger" I have!

My C-96 in 30 Mauser with shoulder stock sure does turn heads at the range!
I asked if I could use it, with and without stock for 2/3 of a 3 gun match! The jury is still out on that one!
Anyone who has lived for 90 years deserves whatever he wants, so get it for him!

I belatedly learned that there are a number of parts assembled C96s in the U.S. I bought one via Gunbroker. I can't say the vendor was dishonest, as all his claims and photos were accurate. What was not said was the serial number indicated 1916 manufacturing, yet the barrel extension was a 1930 version. Has I been more discerning, I would have noticed the barrel extension was not 1916. This was not a Chinese copy, but Mauser parts. And it does turn heads at the range.
