Hello und Gruess Gott, Dave,
thanks a lot for your kind welcome, it is still a great plesasure to watch Bayern Munich when theyplay soccer today, perhaps you know , they are German soccer champion 2010 , once again -like so many times before. I do live in Frankfurt, only a few kilometers away from Rhein Main Air Base. When I want to go hunting, I have the possibility to do this near Frankfurt Main Airport where we have large forest areas in which we have a lot of boars and fallow deer. Or I go about a hundred kilomters by car on the utobahn (Highway) in a region we call Voglsberg, real countryside with quite a lot of animals to hunt. Best respects from Germany Waidmannsheil and good shooting Wisent

Hello SK,
thank you very much for your kind words. Please, could you let me know what calibres do you use when hunting with a muzzleloader ? In Germany most hunters do not like hunting with blackpowder guns because they think the bullets don't have the performance required. I do very well know that this is wrong but one should know that in Germany the hunting laws require a bullet used on deer hunting has to deliver 2000 Joules at a distance of 100 metres; I think that means to use muzzle loaders with a clibre of .50, rather .54. Am I right ? Best regards and thank you in advance Wisent

Hello TX Hunter,
thanks a lot for your welcome, I do love Mausers too. My former "all around gun" in 9,3x62 was a true Mauser, one of the most precise hunting rifles I ever had. Stupid as I was, I sold it when I lost the hunting ground I managed togehther with my dad. Had i some more space oin my vault, I would try to buy it back..... Three shots in the ten ring, like a clover leaf at 100mtrs. Best respects from Germany, alsways good shooting and Waidmannsheil Wisent

Most of the deer and hogs I have killed have been with a .50 Hawken with a .490 round ball. This leaves the muzzle with about 1,400 foot pounds of energy, I don't know how many joules that is.
But it is very lethal on whitetail deer. I have killed over a dozen deer and wild hogs, of 120 to 180 pounds with this load. In all cases I had one shot kills. I made lung shots and none of the game made over 50 yards. I never tried a shot over 80 yards away with my muzzleloader. I don't know if a .490 round ball is Verboten, or not, in Duetschland. See, in America we muzzleloader guys always think back to our pioneer heritage, to guys like Daniel Boone and Simon Kenton. These guys hunted with the patched round ball. Conical slugs had not been invented yet. These pioneers wiped out the elk population from the state of Kentucky by 1810 with patched round balls, so I do not doubt that they would work on your German deer. |

As for bears, we do have a black bear season, though I don't know the specifics. I believe most of them are toward the coast, particularly in the northern part of the state. I would love to hunt black bear, myself, especially with a pistol. |

MR Wiset,
If you ever get the chance, we have some very fine hunting available here in the US. Alot of which is done from stands, or blinds. I think you would enjoy it here. The White Tail Deer, is probably our most popular game. There are several other species to enjoy, and a very diverse landscape. Lots of beautifull sights. If you ever come to visit. Texas would be a good start. You mentioned earlier, the Utobahn Highway, I have alwayse wanted to go for a drive on it, in one of those fast BMWs. I bet thats exciting. Respectfully. Hello Mister TX Hunter,
happy to read your lines, Rick, you are so right, it is extremely exciting to drive along an Autobahn sitting in one of those lightning fast BMW. And that is the way, the world is - those who have the highways where one csan drive without speed limits, they do not want to.... Personally I prefer cruising in a heavy Lincoln Navigator or Chev. Trailblazer or the like. Funny, isn't it? Best regards Wisent

Hello sk,
thanks for your information - I just calculated roughly but I do not think the muzzle energy would be enough to match the German rule I mentioned . Of course I'm totally with you but the law inGermany is as strict as I described - and if a hunter breaks it, he will loose the "trustworthiness" (legal term) to keep and bear arms. Sounds ridiculous, but is the truth..... (Believe me, there is not one day, I shake my head and do not understand our gun laws....) Best regards Wisent
