Just wrapping up tumbling two 5 gallon home depot buckets worth of range brass.

Did a weapons qual last weekend and being in front of all that brass was like an addict in front of crack.

Working on my very first reloads ever.

9mm Winchester 115 FMJ RN. Primer: CCI 500. Winchester brass. OAL 1.165. Doing a work up of Unique 4.9-6.6. Eight of each working up the scale in .1 increments. I figured at least anything this will give me practice reloading.

Loving my Hornady LNL single stage press and dies. Can't wait to get to the range. A little nervous too, but I'm sure that's common.

Alliant Powder lists max load of Unique as 6.3gr for a 115gr GDHP with an OAL of 1.125
http://www.alliantpowder.com/reloade...tid=25&bdid=28

Lee 2nd edition lists Unique with a 115gr FMJ over a starting load of 5.1gr and a max load of 5.5gr with a COL of 1.12.

Personally I would work the load like this

start with 5.3gr with the 1.12 COL
5.3gr with 1.13 COL
5.3gr with 1.14 COL
5.3gr with 1.15 COL

Next
5.4gr with 1.12 COL
5.4gr with 1.13 COL
etc.
etc.

I'd work up the load and COL till I get my desired results for recoil impulse, feeding/reliability and POA/POI.

I'd stay away from anything over 6.0 gr. But that's just one mans opinion, some here may have a different opinion or experience they can share.

Good luck with your first reloads!

Thank you mumbo. I was actually taking the starting load of the Seirra manual and max of the Speer manual. I arrived at the 1.165 as that was the longest wwb round that I found out of measuring 200 rounds, and it fits my mag great and my Walther cycles it without any issues. I did make a couple dummy rounds setting up the dies. LOL. I just wanted to make sure everything cycled fine.

Is this wrong or should I use just one manual?

Just finished 200 rounds of 40 S&W and half way through 400 rounds of 9 mm. Almost makes me want a progressive press, but not yet.

Was just thinking about getting off the couch to do exactly that.
Guess I'll go work up a load for the 500 185g Hornady bullets that came with the lnl ap.

Nothing to exciting, just finished working up a deer hunting load for my 243 Winchester and am in the middle stage of doing the same for my son's 7mm Remington Mag. For the 243 I'm using a Barnes 80 grn TTSX over a max load of Reloader 17 in RP brass with an overall length of 3.735. For the 7 Mag I'm using 154 grn Hornady SST over IMR4831 in RP brass. Still working out best OAL for it.

several projects at once...

problem is that I have more time to load than I have daylight to shoot!

I have test sets ready for:
.270 Win (IMR 4350 and H4831SC)
.308 Win (IMR 4350 and Varget)
These I'm more serious about and will shoot larger samples over chronograph.

I just finished some sets yesterday for plinking ammo:
8 x 57JS (IMR 4350, IMR 4895, Varget, and WC 846)
.30/06 for MilSurp (IMR 4895)
These I'm simply looking for "good enough".

Just got a set of .38 Spc/.357 Magnum dies, gonna start that soon as well.

And I always have 5.56 cases in some stage of case prep, and load them when the "ready to shoot" test ammo is done awaiting time to go to the range.

Clark,

I was thinking about making something like that from 500s&w brass! Don't know what I'd shoot it in, just for ****s and gigs.

I have the same problem as Tom68

I could spend about 3 long days at the range shooting up all of the test loads that are sitting on the table in plastic baggies, all labeled and waiting.

Lately been fiddling with a new 222 Rem, and yesterday loaded up some rounds at different lengths. This rifle has lots of free bore, so the COL is getting fairly long. 40 gr Nosler BT's over 21 gr 4198 and Rem 7 1/2. The velocities at published COL are 150 fps less than advertised, and the accuracy has been spotty. Hope to find that magical COL. But if not, then more test loads will be concocted in hopes that gun will be the magical sod poodle exterminator deluxe.

I just loaded my first .40 cal with lead bullets today with unique and power pistol. They seemed to preform pretty well.
