What will you use for deer season this year??

Our deer season will run over 100 days if you're a bow hunter. Gun only will go about 75. They run concurrently, so one can bow hunt the whole season if you choose. Two deer a day in many counties, only one antlered animal in the pair.

I'll bowhunt plenty, taking advantage of lower hunter pressure, bow only areas once the gun season starts. A Matthews FX and an old PSE Coyote (Dad's bow) for that.

No telling with what rifles I'll hunt. Hadn't killed a deer w/ grandad's m88/.308 in a long time. The Ruger .44 auto carries so easy, it'll hunt some for sure, always does. I've got a nifty post reticle in the Savage scout now, and have not taken a deer w/ since the change from a duplex. I keep threatening to kill a deer w/ a handgun, maybe the Glock 20/10mm? And I really want to see the faces of the guys at the check station when I pull up w/ a deer and the commie PSL/Romak3 Drag lookalike. I better take one w/ the old Rem 14 .30 Rem pump before my eyes get any worse too!

Dang season is still not long enough!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm starting the season with my Ruger #1 in 45-70 and after that my Browning ShortTrac in 308 Winchester. Need to set a final zero for the Browning though.

NY State = Mossberg 500 12 gauge with 24" rifled barrel and Leupold M8 4X.

If successful in NY, PA = Ruger Redhawk .44 mag with Leupold 2X.
If NOT successful in NY, PA = Remington Modely 7 .308 with Leupold 2-7X.

I said last year was my last time deer hunting, however my brother and my oldest grandson are on me about going one more time.
So if I decide to go I'll take my tried and true 280 for opening weekend just in case that once in a lifetime buck appears.
If I don't get the buck opening weekend I may choose to use a handgun the rest of the week.
My oldest grandson has been wanting me to kill a deer with my old Springfield 1873 trapdoor so I might just get that old smokepole down and use it.

Won't be deer this year, but for elk I'll use the one that never lets me down, Remington 78 Sportsman in .270 with a 2.5 x 8 Leupold.

Already started with the hoyt for this year, got a nice doe opening day, Been in a stand almost every night this year, had 2 runons with big daddy but just wasnt happy with the shot offerd. I dont gun hunt much anymore due to the bow keeping the freezer full the last several years, but my old trusty vanguard 270 that was my fathers has been my goto gun for deer hunting, I however would like to shoot one with a shotgun, never done that before. I have taken a deer with my win 94 in 357 and also my smith 686.

No deer this year, just Speed Goats and Elk.

The Speed Goats are already in the freezer. I "unreliabled" Old Reliable with a trigger adjustment... so things didn't work out there (Ruger M77 MkII, .270 Win, Leupold 3.5-10x50mm).

I carried a Krag carbine and my SKS a bit (I don't truck-hunt antelope, I stalk), but never quite got to a comfortable range with them. The Goats both got popped with last year's Christmas present from my wife: Marlin XL7 in .30-06, with a Bushnell 4200 Elite 3-9x40mm. (I highly recommend the Marlin, but strongly suggest getting a Leupold over the Bushnell.)

One was a ~100 yard spine shot. One was a ~200 yard head shot.


The Elk hunt will probably see the XL7, Krag (.30-40, iron sights, 220gr Hornady RN handloads), and Mosin M38 (7.62x54R, iron sights, 215gr Woodleigh RN handloads). If Old Reliable is fixed by that time, it will go along as the scoped-rifle backup (Norma 150gr Oryx factory loads, or 140gr Federal Trophy Bonded Bear Claws, that were both picked up on clearance).

I will be using my buddies old Remington 870 Wingmaster with a short slug barrel and 3X9 scope. We are limited to shotgun only in my area of the state.

Well lets see... Gonna be hunting in two different states this year:

Kentucky: Russian 7.62x54R Rifle Iron sights in November

Georgia: SKS 7.62x39 with cheapo 9x something scope.
