Ruger P95 vs. Taurus 24/7 Pro

Okay, so I am buying a budget priced semi to stick in my jeep for day to day driving, and for offroading/camping/hiking purposes. My choices are Taurus 24/7 Pro in .45 with 2 12 round magazines, or Ruger P95 with 2 15 round magazines.

This is not intended to be a 9mm vs. 45 debate, but if it is relevant to why I should/should not pick the gun, besides just saying the .45 is better, I welcome any input.

Please. . . . . . . .

1.Do not say neither, save up and get something better.

2. Do not share anything besides first hand experience with either of the weapons, I don't really care about the Taurus that blew up in your friends great uncles hand and killed 17 bystanders.

While either would be serviceable, I would go with the 24/7 Pro over the P-85. It is FAR more ergonomic than the Ruger for me personally.

I have a Ruger KP95 DC and a 9mm Taurus 24/7 Pro C. My Ruger is well made and easy to clean, but it is not the most accurate pistol I own, the DA trigger really stinks, and some of my friends have limpwristed it even though they do not have limpwristing problems shooting other guns including the supposedly limpwritsting-prone Glock. My Taurus took 200 rounds to break in with many, many (easily 75%) failures to return to battery during that time. It is by far the least accurate pistol I own, and probably the least accurate pistol I have ever fired, although I recognize that it is likely due to poor workmanship on my particular pistol. It seems to work fine now...except for the occasional light primer strike.

Of the two, I would recommend the Ruger...but I would really recommend a Sig P6 for $350 or a used Glock 22 for $330.

A Ruger P97DC??
I got one back when they were still in production...easily one of the most accurate handguns(of any caliber) I have ever shot.
Never have had a SINGLE hiccup, EVER!!

Just my 2 cents....

You would be VERY well-advised to buy the Ruger in this instance. There is honestly no comparison as far as reliability and durability goes.

Check any gun forum for complaints of the Ruger P95. Let me save you some time; there aren't any.

Now check for Taurus complaints..........

Please learn from tens of thousands of people and their experiences. Buy the Ruger.

I had the taurus 24/7 45acp and I currently have a ruger p95. Both were reliable and actually I think the taurus was a little easier to shoot accurately. The taurus shot a tad low and taurus doesn't have different height sights to get the gun to shoot exactly to point of aim. I sold the taurus because I already had other 45's I liked better. I guess it is a toss up but I tend to think I would trust the ruger more. You know ruger makes 45's too.

I like the Torus better but I always just say buy what feels better to you. I have not really liked that specific Ruger.

I have owned 3 Taurus firearms and will never buy another. The last one was a 24/7 purchased this past May. The trigger work was absolutely an abomination. It was the worst of any semi that I have ever owned.

I have a PT145 and an old P85 MKII. The Ruger will be heavier and the slide mounted safety is a bit awkward when you're in a hurry. I didn't like the Ruger at first, but Hogue grips transformed it... WAY better than the hard plastic OE grips. Both of my pistols have proven reliable, though the Ruger has way more rounds down the pipe because of it's age and ammo cost.

The effectiveness of either cartridge is more dependant on your ability to hit the target than anything else, but given the option I'd choose the .45.

I shoot the P95 the most (cheap, available ammo) and correspondingly have had the most malfunctions (failure to return to battery, FTF) even though predominantly shoot FMJ. Even with the slip-on grips the ergos kind of suck, and the creepy trigger makes it difficult to achieve accuracy with an pistol that only has mediocre accuracy anyways. I consider it broken in now, now problems in a long time (roughly 600rds shot).

I have a soft spot for the Taurus...it has a sweet trigger and wonderful ergos. Less than 200rds through it at this time but I've had a mag full of malfunctions once (failure to return to battery twice, firing pin failed to work because of excess factory lube). I chose a display model with a very tight lockup and find it quite accurate. I can't wait to shoot it more and hope it is a reliable gun like most 24/7 customers get (check taurusarmed.net).

The P97 is probably the best of the bunch so far...very reliable, accurate enough, ergonomic enough, and has a nice trigger for a DA/SA pistol. Only 8+1 capacity though...I bought it before the ban expired.

Another vote for the Ruger P95. Cheeper to shoot, life time warranty, durable/reliable made in America. It cost me $30 bucks for a trigger job on my first P95 and is now similar to my Glock trigger. As far as accuracy of all my qualification scores it's my top score being 100%. S0 much for the lack of accuracy mith. My P89 was a tack driver and !00% reliable , stolen by some dirt bag. Sure miss that gun.

I owned a P95 DC for three years and went to LFI-1 with it. The P95 gets my vote as a best buy for the money. Mine was completely reliable with any kind of decent ammo , easy to maintain , and quite accurate.
When I tried to make mine jam -- it took a combo of weak handloaded ammo and no ( as in: none) lubrication to produce ocassional failure.
The ergo's are what they are. Not great but usable for most hands.

If I had my way I would shoot the 24/7 almost all of the time; I love that gun, just not sure I trust it quite yet. The reason I don't shoot it is because .45acp was unavailable for a long time, and now I'm unemployed and the prices are still appalling to me.

Now my P95 I know I would not trust for HD, it's had too many jams. I would use my Mossberg instead, or my AK for longer range farm use.

Oh, I did in fact contact Ruger about it...they said their gunsmith would call me back and he/she never did. I'm not impressed. Still like Rugers though.

I would never chose Taurus over a Ruger no matter how fancy the Taurus, and how rugged the Ruger is.

fired my new P95 yesterday and I can say "it's a great gun" It's my third P95 well worth the $299 I paid for it. It was 100% reliable and accurate enough to put 98% of my rounds in the A zone. The friend I was shooting with was firing his new P95 and put all rounds in the A zone in a three inch group. He's very happy with his new gun as well. The P95 rocks.

Have to make a slight correction. Taurus 24/7s have a SA/DA trigger that is similar to DAO triggers. The lighter trigger stroke gives the primer a healthy whack to set it off. If that does not work the trigger is pulled a second time and a even healthier whack is given to the primer.

With the new lead free primers and European ammo that have "hard primers", there have been a lot of problems with primer ignition with DAO or similar trigger type pistols of any brand.

Easy to use,maintain, and they've had thousands of rounds down range through both without any failures. The other side of the coin is the Taurus. Can't go wrong with either pistol that you pick. Try them all out and see what fits you. For example, my hands are small and have short fingers as well. Thus a single stack pistol (SIG P6), or a PT111, or the 24/7 will be a good ergonomic fit. The Bersa is a standard DA/SA trigger. Long hard first pull for the first shot and then each follow up shot is light single action. Rugers are the same. 24/7s are DAO type trigger pistols. And the 24/7s have restrike capability. May or may not be important to you. DAO type triggers take a whole different mind set, discipline, and set of training techniques to become and stay proficient. If you have prior experience and are proficient with a certain trigger type, why not stay with that type. There you have it.
