If so what loads did you use?
How bad is accuracy when you use 458 Winchester in the 458 Lott Chamber? |

Sound like a real shoulder pounder to me but, In the
10th edition of Handloaders Digest Jack Lott discribes how he arrived at the 458 Lott. One picture included shows a 50 yd. group of 3 shots with the 458 Lott, all holes touching. The next picture show a 50 yd target with 2 holes touching and the 3rd about 2" out, from factory 458 round. His initial load was 83gr of H4895, Hornady 500gr softpoints. this produced 2090fps. The working load he settled on was 85gr of 4320 for 2300fps. Please see the article for details. |

One of my Loading manuals does have data for the Lott. I was mainly curious to know what results people have got with it.
Was thinking if it shot well enough using 300 Nosler Partition or Speer's 400 sp loaded to match or slightly exceed 45-70 ballistics, in the 458 Winchester brass, it would work for deer and hogs out to at least 200 yards without heavy levels of recoil. Saving the Lott shell for 500 grain Swift or Speer AGS-Solids loaded to 2150-2200. I don't really need a heavy so I am trying to find an arguement that works for me to get one I would prefer a 416 or 470 but finding good deer bullets in those calibers is a bit more difficult and expensive than using 45-70 bullets in a 458. So shooting normal big game or paper seems more reasonable with a 458 using the cheaper & more common bullets. |
