John Linebaugh shot a 350 grain LBT .45 Colt traveling at 1187 fps through 42 inches of wet newspaper. The 338 Lapua 250 FXB traveling at 2900 fps managed 32". A 30-06 220 cor-lokt only made it through 17.5". Never underestimate the caliber that won the West.

Here are my results, fired into shredded rubber mulch (compared to a 158 grain .357 mag fired into the same media with 17" penetration).
I like the 45 Colt. Great cartridge, made even better with the strong Ruger revolvers. |

Sooner or later people are going to realize that these big, heavy hardcast slugs at moderate velocity penetrate and kill all out of proportion to their modest energy numbers. That energy is way too dependent on velocity, puts little importance on weight and none on diameter.
I tried the same test, trying to see if the 240gr Hornady swaged hollowpoint would expand at 750-800fps and gave up when it exited on seven water-filled milk jugs. |

On my search for loading "magnum" loads for my 45 colt I didn't bother looking into JHP rounds after reading the very same thing. I thank you for your time in testing as well.

Here is a link to the Linebaugh penetration test results for a few years. Trying to find additional articles on it.
http://www.handloads.com/misc/lineba...tion.tests.asp I shoot non-expanding cast bullets exclusively in my big bore (.41 and up) revolvers and have found that the proper bullet design, placed well, kills just as good and even better than many hollowpoints. JW |

You should try one of these. Out of a Ruger Blackhawk this penetrated a deer at 20 yards and stopped on the hide on the back side. They were loaded to about 1000 (no crono). I only had a sample number last fall but have more on order. Looking for some for the 44 which he will have soon. 270 Grain Thunderhead. http://www.pennbullets.com/45/45-caliber.html

tests are not always as it seems...
some penetration tests can fool you. You can physically with your hands push an arrow through yards of that stuff, but shoot it from a bow and it won't go far, but, and there always is a but in life, try and push an arrow through a cape buff and it won't happen even if it let you they are too tough, but shoot it fast enough from a bow and it will!!!
