Mauser stock hole purpose

I alwasy heard the reason for the stell lined hole in the K-98 stock was to assist with bolt disassembly in the field. A friend just told me that was a secondary use of the hole. The main use was to allow the passage of a long through bolt that secured the rifles while in there shipping crates. Any truth to that?

According to this website you are correct and your friend isn't.

http://www.mausershooters.org/k98k/k98kframe.html

Click on the "K98k" at the left. Click on the "view image in English". Read "bolt disassembly disk". Then call your friend and make your bet! Any help?

Yes, it is usually known as the stock take down disc or bolt take down disc - a securing point for transport in crates is fanciful at best and complete nonsense.
