Cast 45/70s in Micro-groove

I have several 458 moulds, one being 330 Gould express hp. I have shot a lot
of these out of various single shots including Ruger #1. All gave good results.
I was going to load up some for Marlin 1895, that is 1970s manf. My buddies tell
me micro- groove will not shot cast and will lead barrel. Anybody up on this?

Go to cast boolits. There are plenty of people using cast bullets in Marlins with micro groove barrels.

I want to follow your thread.

I see no reason for the assertions related to excessive leading. You need to get the proper alloy and bullet diameter.

Did you slug your bore?

What is the diameter of the bullets as they drop from your mold?

Have you looked into bullet uniformers/sizers from Lee Precision?

My thinking is you will likely be using a harder alloy bullet that is .001" larger than your bore for best accuracy and minimal leading. Just don't push them excessively fast. I shoot my own cast bullets in my Guide Gun with great success but I don't have microgroove rifling.

Bigarm is correct, a wealth of knowledge on Cast Boolits and the guys are always willing to help.

There was an issue of Handloader Magazine a few months ago that touched on this subject. I can't remember all they said but I do remember that it could be done but they went .002" larger on the bullet than bore diameter. I can look it up for you if you'd like.

DRM50 - Just curious, which is your favorite 45-70? I'm trying to convince myself I need another one so my lever gun won't feel lonely.
