If all ammo was roughly the same cost....what is a particular caliber you want???
OK, a lot of us don't own calibers outside of the "mainstream", common ones because of ammo availabilty and cost. If that wasn't an issue and everything was roughly around the cost of 9mm-.40 s&w...whare are on or two calibers you would like to own and why...
I think I would love to have a .41 magnum.....great power without being "overkill". I also am fascinated with the .32 h&r...something about it always ahs seemed "neat" to me.

If everything was the cost of 9mm I would own more .45's. Feeding the one I have is expensive enough with the amount I shoot.
In a handgun I'd like to have a .357Sig, and a .400Corbon. Something about bottleneck pistol cartridges fascinate me. I guess that's one reason I bought the .32NAA instead of .380 when I bought my guardian. In rifle calibers (yes I know you didn't ask, and I am fully aware that this is the handgun forum) I would like a .243WSSM. But given 40 bucks a box (of 20) ammo costs, I think I'll go with the good old .243 Win instead (though the premium rounds aren't much less!). |

Since I reload
It all cost close to the same. But if I had to buy and it was all the same price it would make no difference to me. I shoot 44 SP the most and would continue to shoot it the most.

.45 and .357, but I'd settle for 28 ga. Lots of 28 ga.

Since I reload, 45 costs the same as 9, therefore I'm thinking of moving to all 45s. There aren't many non-1911s that excite me...

If it all cost the same as 9mm I would own a .50GI a .50AE and a 500 magnum

.45, I moved away from it to 9mm the last 3-4 years because of the amount of I was shooting. I couldn't load enough on the Rockchucker to keep me in ammo. I recently edged my way back when I bought a 21SF as a new EDC. Figure I'll upgrade the reloader to progressive and not worry about ammo cost.

I've always been a fan of .357 sig. Do we get guns in this caliber as well? Also 5.7mm would be neat.

Easy: .38 Super. No second choices. It is really a cartridge for the 1911 but I prefer the .38 Super to the .45 ACP for some reason even though all handguns above .32 and below the handcannon class have pretty much all the same value, in my opinion. I like the 125-grain .357 in revolvers partly because of the similiar performance.

I have litterally every hand gun caliber I'd like... hmm... some I don't currently have but would like to get in the future... 357 Sig, 445 Super Mag, 500 S&W...
... if they were cheaper... I probably just shoot my 50 AE, & 10 mm Mag Automags a bit more if someone wants to fund my rifle shooting more... a large supply of 7.62 X 45 in non corrosive ammo, & a boat load of 416 Rigby would be great...

For pistol caliber ammo...
7.62 Tokarev is fun, and doesn't cost that much more, especially if you go with surplus. Can I substitute widespread availibility in place of cheap ammo? If that doesn't work, I have been meaning to buy a .45. Or maybe something magnum would be good. |

In my case, the question just does not apply. I reload just about everything I shoot except .22lr, hence all handgun calibers (except for .22lr) are already pretty much the same to me, cost-wise. Yes, some bullets are more expensive than others of a similar type but not all that much more so, it is more related to the cost of materials. And yes, there are some pretty significant differences in the cost of brass from one caliber to the next, but that is mitigated by the fact that I can get several loadings per casing. Primers aren't dependent on the caliber for the most part, and the differences in powder type and powder charges aren't all that significant to the bottom line.
Anyway, for instance, it really wouldn't cost that much more for me to shoot 10mm or .41 Magnum than it does for me to shoot .357 Magnum. Not radically so, anyway. And, it wouldn't cost that much more for me to shoot .357 Sig than it would for .357 Magnum, or for that matter 9mm. Same thing for .40 S&W. .44 Magnum? It would be somewhat more expensive than shooting .357 Magnum, but not radically so -- the bullets are a bit more expensive and the powder charges are larger, but that's about it as far as cost goes. Same thing for .44 Special. .32 H&R Magnum and it's lower power ancestors turn out to cost about the same to shoot as .38 Spl, other than case price and even then that's not all that expensive, especially when you factor in reuse. My opinion: buy what you want and shoot what you want. If factory ammo prices are too high for you, then reload. If you don't want to reload (for whatever reason), then don't complain about ammo prices.

A handloader here checking in; but for defensive purposes I prefer the
Hornady 200 grain T.A.P. JHP's in .45ACP's, and Winchester's 147 grain "Deep Penetration" Black Talons* for my 9m/ms~! *FootNote- Yep, I still have some left over from my days as a LEO; when they were standard issue by my department. |

I'm curious about the .357 SIG. It would seem to be a nice choice but I'm not sure.
however, I KNOW the 357 Magnum would be much more common in my locker. oh, wait, it already is common in my locker.

Another reloader here, albeit a rather lazy one*, also agreeing that it doesn't really matter. I've got most of the uses I want (.44 Magnum, 9mm) covered. The only thing to add would be a nice 4" .357 and a full-sized 1911 in .45 ACP (what else would you get in a Government Model? ).
*I've been mostly shooting .22LR lately as I just don't feel like reloading. Also, I can do a lot more shooting for less cost and body stress than even with low-powered .44 loads or 9mms. As a bonus, most quality .22s seem to be capable of good to excellent accuracy, IME.

I am amazed Rotorhead hasn't torted in with .45 GAP.
Me, I'm a .45 guy due to expense of anything greater. If everything was as cheap as 9 mil??? 5.7 for the originality, even though I am well aware that the "it'll go through a IIIA vest at 100 yds" claims of the gunshop owner I spoke with about it are completely BS. I still don't think any pistol round will be able to make it through a vest. He also called it a 300 yd pistol. He was in Jacksonville trying to hawk stuff on young Marines though. It did make me mad, but I didn't argue with him. Besides, 20 rounds in a pistol with a reasonable weight is pretty cool in itself. |

I love it when people are obsessed with what I say...well, now that you opened the door...all things being equal, of course I would buy GAP rounds...how's that for "torting" in?

Not obsessed, just that you've found every other avenue possible to market the GAP to include starting a 3 page thread in which half the posts were from you... Just calling it as I see it.

If it came down to it, and all things were equal, I'd love to have a 10mm in my stable again.
