Is the mossberg 590 a smooth bore, or is it choked?

The two aren't mutually exclusive. Or did you mean to ask 'cylinder bore or choked,' or was it 'smooth bore or rifled'?

Cylinder bore is a very light (or zero) amount of constriction in the shotgun barrel.
Generally, the least to most choke applied is - Cylinder Bore, Imroved Cylinder, Modified and Full choke. While the exact ammo is very important as to the results on target, generally the tighter the choke, the tighter the pattern, I.E., spread of the shot at a given range.

Choke is a constriction at the muzzle to concentrate the shot into a pattern that's usable at a given range. The more choke, the longer the pattern stays together.
Cylinder Bore is zero choke. With the best ammo, the pattern is workable out to a nominal 25 yards or so. Except for a few specialized barrels, all shotgun barrel are smoothbore. Most have some degree of choke greater than Cylinder and most newer barrels have interchangeable tubes to make the pattern fit the range, target and load. The archives here have a trove of info on this. HTH.... |
