bolt action 30/30

i am interested in finding a 30/30 in bolt action, the only one that comes to mind was steven modle 340. i dont know of any thing else, help would be appreciated. cjs

The Stevens model, was the 325A (below), which later became the Savage 340.

Good luck in your search, these tend to be good bargains.

Remington sold the 788 bolt action in 30-30.
I have one but seem to have forgotten what the advantage was supposed to be. Of course I handload and can make about any .30 cal rifle shoot like a .30-30.
A non-reloader might find one a source of reasonable power, easily scope sighted.

Could it have been the 778 lock time Jim?

I also have a Remington 788 in 30-30win. Not easy to come by today, but a very nice rifle.
I had a friend with an FFL keep watch and he came up with one out of shotgun news.
One of the perceived problems with the 30-30 is the rimmed case makes for magazine problems. again perceived problem of one getting interlocked with another. I have had no problem nor has my daughter whom the rifle was purchased for.
If you can find one in good condition go for it.

Mine's a 340 Savage. I got it from my dad who bought it in the early 1950's, IIRC. I load 110gr bullets, getting it up close to 2500fps.

The real advantage to bolt action .30-30 IMO was the fact that you could use a far wider variety of bullets. Spitzer, flat nose, or round they were all able to be used in these rifles. So for the handloader the variety of ammunition that they could cook up would be amazing.

not easy to find one, and harder to find someone whos wiling to get rid of it.

ive heard rumors that the new scoped rifle from remington that comes with 3/4 roudn magazine, is supposed to be available in 30-30, but i cant getverification from remington customer support.

7 years ago, a phillipine company imported a few thousand Enfield Jungle Carbines rebarreled for 30-30. Last time i heard they wanted almost 1,000 for one.

The Stevens 325 and the Savage 340 variants are all over gunbroker for around 350, often less. These great little rifles were made under a few other models-names too.

The Springfield 840

The Western Field 712

The Revelation Model 225

Had a savage 340 for my first centerfire , great rifle. It seemed to be much more accuate than my aunts win 94 and 92, possibly the barrrel bands I guess. My local GS has one for $199, also see them at gun shows for around $160. I wouldn't pay much more then $200-$300 for one though.

I have ALWAYS wanted a 325 A/B/C in 30-30. When I find one they're either rusty and $400+ or I put my hands on a later 340 but its in .222 and again for big money.
Of course my favorites are the occasional GB item with real fuzzy photo and no magazine for $199-250

I have one, its a Springfield 840 Very light handy Carbine, Its acurate, although the Magazine is a bit sticky, Its a very nice firearm.
I put a brand new Walnut Stock on mine that I bought from Numrich Supply.
Had to do a little file work to get the safety to fully engauge with the new stock, I will post a picture for you in a little while.
I have scope mounts for it, and plan to add a 4x scope in the future.
I am looking forward to trying the new lever Revolouton ammo in this one, when I mount the scope on it.

Shoot, at the start of this thread I got to thinking my old Savage 340 was getting rare and the value was going up! By the end of the thread it's back down to $160, about where I've always considered it to be.

This is my former Stevens rifle. I sold this 30-30 to purchase an out-of-state license and related tag. So it goes.

This rifle would shoot 125 grain Sierra hand loads into a 4 inch circle at 150 yards from steady rest. Loads were NOT hot; just copied from a common loading manual. This Sierra bullet behaves like a big game bullet at 30-30 velocity. That is, quick mushroom, wide wound channel, and deep penetration on mulies up to 250 lbs or so. For those Easterners who are convinced a magnum rifle is req'd for mulies at 200 yards, this rifle and hand loads always got the job done quickly for my extended family.

How yesterday's bargin rifle is still in demand, and at a less than bargin price, when you can find one?

The Savage/Stevens 340 series and the Remington 788 are the only two that come to mind.

You can still get good single shots in .30-30 (to use spitzer bullets, if you handload). T/C Contender is one.
