Wrist Breaker

Yes, I have a wrist breaking load for the .454 Casull - 32.5 grains of W296 with a 300 gr. XTP or 300 grain Nosler. I'm sure the pressure if up there, but the cases don't stick. For grizz, I'd go with the Nosler. Velocity in the Ruger Super Redhawk 7.5 inch is ~1700 fps.

But, if you get ambushed by a grizz, will you have a chance to get a shot off? I doubt it, because hunters near Yellowstone aren't even getting a shot off before they get hammered by the big bears. This last fall was a record year for getting attacked in the peri-Yellowstone region.

Why stress yourself and the handgun?

When they become available, trade that .454 in for a .460 S&W. Over 2400 fps, with a 200 grain bullet!!!

I would imagine that most reloading manuals have the loads you are looking for and they have been pressured tested

Use caution when asking for load data on the net , I have seen some loads that are very hot . While they may be safe one gun they may not in another . Always verify data and work up !!

The December-January 2005 issue of Handloader Magazine had an article on the .454 Casull. The pub has a website at www.handloadermagazine.com. You may want to try there.

I'm working up loads for my Puma '92 but don't personally have anything that fits your requirements yet.

Maybe try these, and look to the hardcast and/or flat point penetrators:

cpileri beat me to the punch. I totally agree with his concern over the use of hollow point bullets on dangerous game. A cast bullet would better for penetration. Even Federal offers a cast bullet for hunting.

I second that, and add that the heavies from Cast Performance, 335's and bigger, would be my choice. Their 395's would probably be the choice for bruin encounters....

Bullets-

Both Gun Trader and Mountain View Sports stock Cast Performance bullets in Anchorage.
H-110 and Lil Gun are the current powders of choice these days tho you'll have some fun researching the old "triplex" loads of yore!

You can order a copy at this link:

It's listed as the December 2004 issue.

ill look into that but dont they have to be some specific type of bullet like hard cast penetrator or xtp/MAG or it can mess up the gun with the pressures and the bullets being to soft for the pressures or something of the sort thanks again for all the advice keep it comin

In your opinion, is the article worth buying the magazine for? (Not trying to be cute, it's an honest question.) Usually Brian Pearce's articles are quite good.

Try www.loadswap.com and look up the .454 Casull, I got some good info off the page for some 360gr hardcast stuff. They also sell bullets on the home page, I believe it Beartooth bullets. They make the heaviest .454 Casull bullet that I've seen at 405 grs.

The article is why I bought the magazine. It's a seven page piece by Brian Pearce.
