powder question for .308/SMK 175 gr
Looking for some input on powder choices. We are shooting through a 24" barrel with a 1 in 10 twist on a Savage 308 Winchester rifle. Have good quantities of several slower burning powders for the 270 WSM and 300 Win Mag and would like to use them. Any experience with:
IMR 4350, H4350 or Hybrid 100V? We use IMR 4831 and H4831/4831SC too and have plenty but expect these burn too slow to use. Probably H1000 completely out of the question? Thanks |

Yep, all too slow. Can't get enough in the case. Top accuracy recommendations most often are IMR 4064, Varget, and Reloader 15 at your bullet weight. Of those, your gun will tell you which is best for it. Reloader 15 is used by Lake City for M118LR sniper ammunition using the 175 grain SMK. For a tac rifle, that's not a bad starting choice. Varget will do better about consistency in temperature extremes, but will get you the lowest velocity of the three.
Use Winchester cases to get the extra case capacity they have to maximize your velocity potential. Deburr flash holes to assist with ignition consistency, particularly in temperature extremes. Use Federal 210M or TulAmmo KVB7 primers unless you are going into extreme cold. In that case develop a load with a magnum primer. Both seem to produce excellent consistency. The Federals are easier to seat and to fire, but the TulAmmo may produce the most consistency. Seat them hard if you use them.

Yep, the Army uses Reloder 15. I buy the stuff in 4 lb jugs. Great powder, great ammo.

2230-C and Varget
I have used Accurate's 2230-C Data Powder (Surplus), and Varget. Both work very well. 2230-C loads using 2460 load data. It is 2230 with a slowing agent. I liked working with 2230-C, it meters very well. 2460 exceeds and Varget duplicates the R15 loads in the Sierra data for 308/175/180.

Varget....
just started playing with RE-15 but so far, Varget is on top for both the .308 and the 7.62 x 54R. Ironically, the .308 shoots 175 smk's, and the Russian 174 smk's (.311)- and the most accurate load for both is identical at 43.5 grains. |

Speer, Sierra, Nosler, Hornady and Hodgdon have all published data for 4350 with 180 gr bullets in the 308. If you're not concerned with getting top velocities, no reason not to give it a try.
