I've been using Bullseye, Titegroup, Clays, and W231. My stock is about depleted so instead of buying a 4 lb jug, I bought a container of Universal Clays to try out. Does anybody have a good target load with this powder? Am I better off with Bullseye and Titegroup? BTW, this is for a 5" barrel 1911 .45 ACP.

Son,
Pulled this from my Hogdon manual: Some of my loads that work well for target with Uni-Clays are: Nosler 185gr FMJ FP 6.6gr 1.200 OAL W.Coast 200gr FMJ RN 6.2gr 1.230 " W.Coast 230gr FMJ RN 5.6gr 1.250 " moderate but accurate. Fired from Colt Series 80 Barsto barrel & Bul M5 hicap polymer (kimer poly cousin) Hope it helps! Regards, [This message has been edited by rinoray (edited September 21, 2000).] |

Thanks for the info! Do you have an experiences using 200 grain lead semi-wadcutters with Universal Clays? |

I do, but ultimate best 200g LSWC results still are with W231.
Universal Clays is very very good.... ------------------ "All my ammo is factory ammo" |

Yes, I have some loaded from last week. 200gr LSWC 5.8gr U/C 1.250 OAL Starline cases - Win LPP Good recoil control and are pretty accurate, more the gun than me. Off of rest 2-3" group, nice round holes - no keyholes @ 50'. Enjoy! |

Did you chrono that load at all? If so, what's the velocity? With a 200 grain lswc with that load, I'm guessing around 775-800 fps? Anything over 850 fps and I start getting lead residue in my barrel. |

Sorry,
Our clubs chrono was shot and is in disrepair. I can only guess (not very scientific), but, would put them at around 790-800 - that's what they chronograph indicated on previous similar loads. Haven't noticed any lead build up in barrel, unless I'm using soft bullets. Are your hard cast? |

Yes they are hard cast but when I practice, I do a lot of defensive shooting. Meaning, lots of double taps and emptying the mag really fast.
When I'm shooting for accuracy, it's not a problem. |

Son.
I always use my FMJ bullets for defense. I would recommend starting 0.5 gr down around 5.3 and see what you get. For double taps maybe a good baseline. |
