Winchester Model 1897?

Hi, a friend of mine has a Winchester Model 1897 (he also states the words Model 97 appear on it in another location), 12 gauge and with a long (30") barrel attached.

He's given me a S/N of D3968xx.

Anyone have a clue for the year of manufacture for this? He said this belonged to his wife's grandfather, and its mostly collecting dust. He'd like to get an idea of what its worth, really, as well as the curiousity of the age of it.
