Noob questions about Barrel Threading

If your rifle didn't came with threads from the factory, can you just take it to a gunsmith and have it threaded?

Does it matter if the rifle was built in America Vs somewhere else?

Do you need a permit before you have your barrel threaded?

Is it an expensive job?

1. Yes. Provided your Gunsmith has the ability to thread your particular action or can take the barrel out of the action.
2. Not really.
3. Not from the federal standpoint. (Local Laws do vary.)

If your gunsmith doesn't do a lot of threading, he may not know what thread pattern you need. There are different thread patterns that are "standard" for different calibers. So be sure you know what you want will match what you need.

A major concern is getting the threads cut concentric to the bore; if not you'll be looking at baffle strikes ($$). A good machinist/gunsmith can do it. Not everyone has the skill to cut them concentric.
