Anyone looking forward to hunting season?

Since there are no varmints I know of in my area, all I do is wish I was hunting.

There was this thread at the end of the season last year: http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/...hlight=learned

Well, What are you going to do different this year?

I have bought a new climber (a summit 180) so I can sit comfortably. I have already started scouting at my lease. I have been checking wind currents, entry and exit routes, old scrapes and rubs.

I have bought and set out a feeder to help the deer with food and protein, Got a shooting house set up (mainly so my son can take a deer!). I have been practising my archery (at least twice a week for 15 minutes)

I have been researching new loads and ballistics for my different hunting rifles. I might actually get 200 yard shots.... I have been looking for a scope and mount for my SBH.

How cool would it be to get a nice buck from a climbing treestand with a 44mag revolver!?

I haven't started counting the days yet, but I can't wait!

The place I hunt at has a 70 acre block of planted pines. I am mowing every third row. Also planting some forage for the deer. Each of my hunting buddies are doing something for there spot. I am also building a stand. I am a meat hunter by nature, but I want to put a strong effort towards getting a real nice buck this year- say 150 scored

Savage, What are you planting?

I tried some iron/clay peas for the summer, but this lack of rain has done nothing for them.

My winter forage is going to be: iron/clays, wheat, rye, clover, soybean, and brassica(rapeseed?). A local farm supply carries this mix. The other hunters on my lease use it with excellent crop results.

It looks like we will be getting 2 or 3 doe tags this year (per person). If I get them early, I will definatly work for a nice "mounter" buck.

I am going to use this shade mix. I also will use some persimmon salt licks later in the year close to season opening. I have tried the apple, sweet corn, and some other stuff. I have my best luck with the persimmon. The trick is to bury them half way in the ground. If hogs are in the area, tie them in a tree.

Gbro,

Come on out anyway! Watch the DOW web site you can pick up some leftover tags in August. The list comes out in July and that will give you about 30 days to plan before you buy.

Do you even need to ask?

I hunt pretty much all year. Coyotes all year long, gophers in the summer, deer.

I got too busy trying to find a job and forgot about the big game draws here in Saskatchewan so I wont be getting Moose or Mule Deer. However I can get two antlerless mule deer tags and a White-tail.

Ill be going for Geese, Prairie Chickens, and Ducks too.

Strangely enough, no, not yet. I think I feel a psychological need to eat a lot more of last year's meat before it's "right" to start thinking of getting more. Just ate some great steaks tonight, but I've got to eat venison more often to get er done.

I *am* however looking forward to the results of the controlled hunt draws in July....that oughtta get me looking forward to Oct.

Lots of varmints here but we also have the WORK thing going so I haven't been too much. Montana Antelope season in Sept. Also Grouse and Pheasant. Then Mule deer in Oct. (We have a lot Whitetail too but I like to hunt Mulies) Then about the 2nd week of Nov I like to start hunting elk.

Mule deer back steak. Cut 1 1/2" thick. Marinade Then Grill!!!

I got the millsurp disease and started reloading to feed my habit. I'm working up loads for my Enfields for moose season. Which rumor has it is going to be opened in August, so almost two months to get a moose, and one not in rut.

And there is that work thing, and that salmon thing that is starting now!

I've been out of meat for a couple months now. I'm gettin' jumpy now. Been in the suburbs too long. I can't wait to get back in the woods.

you betcha

We went out last weekend and scouted in the Sam Houston National Forest. The first major "intersection" with multiple deer tracks we found, I was ready. Archerandshooter laughed at me when I sighed and said, "five more months..."

We still have venison and pork in the freezer, but it'll be gone just about in time to replace it.

After my less then successful spring turkey season I am looking forward to getting into some pheasant in the fall followed by some good times with my dad and grandfather at the crappy old one room shack we call our deer hunting cabin. I wouldn't sell that shack for any amount of money.

The summit climber is going to spoil you. I love my climber. I have had good success with using it daily.

I hunt a couple of areas during archery season. Both areas have 4 trees that I frequent. I go up them and trim limbs so that when I arrive, I check the wind and attach my climber to whatever pre-trimmed tree is down wind of my travel corridor.

I also practice shooting my bow from an elevated stand. You should do the same.

My stand sitting time went to 6+ hours in a treestand from about 3 1/2 when I got my climber. The arm support and comfortable position make it easier on my back. I stay in the tree until I want to leave instead of have to get down.

I put in for two bison draws and a cow moose draw. Won't know the results until the end of the month. If I don't get drawn I'll still be able to moose hunt anyway. The cow tag would just give me an extra opportunity.

For now I'm contented with winching halibut up off the bottom of the Pacific and netting some red salmon.

Pulled up seven last week. My share worked out to about 35 lbs of fillets.

Dove season opens Sept. 1 so I'm planting my field right about now. I also do nuisance wildlife work and fish which keeps me in the woods and waters. Plus, I'm reloading and shooting a lot to stay sharp.

Mixed feelings about this......one part of me looks forward to the hunting, down side is knowing it'll be another year dealing with tresspassers and the increasing number of slob hunters.

Sheep Season

Sheep season is less than two months away.

I have my mileage up to 6 runs per week with 3-6 miles per run in the evenings

I lift five times per week with a double split for bodyparts.(bb with powerlifting)
Squats are at 500lbs for 6 reps.
Bench is at 365lbs for 6 reps 225lbs for 22reps.
five sets of pullups 20reps, 15reps, 12reps, 12 reps, 12 reps,

I'm 6ft and weigh 240lbs and need to get down to 230lbs for sheep season.
I want to get fat percentage down under 12%.

I shoot twice per week.
once per week with hunting rifle.

I bought brand new bibler mountain tent and ID sleeping bag.

I will go out to the mountains at the end of the month after jury duty is over.
I will then work on packing trips and climbing the slide a 3000ft shale slide .5 miles from our house in Chitina with 60lb pack.

Then I will be ready.

One question.
I find myself having to stretch out more and more as I get older.
I am only 38 so I hope that it doesn't get too much harder to keep
tendons and joints happy. I take supplements but it still ticks me off because
my muscles feel good just my joints get sore.
