Where can I pick up nice imitation pearl grips or fake Ivory grips?
Looking for a manufacturer of custom grips. I used to get my grips from Ajax grip company but I am unable to find them online. If you know where they are currently at please let me know. I am looking for imitation pearl grips or Ivory grips for a Beretta or for a Detonic. Thanks

You know what Patton said about pearl grips?
Tastes vary, but when I see plastic grips on a gun, I just think "Oh, that guy has plastic grips on an otherwise nice gun..." There's some beautiful burl grips around that are actually classy and look nice. |

Gun shops usually have a box of plastic grips under the counter. They sometimes take real ugly New Orleans pimp grips off of handguns and stash them so the gun will sell.
Edit: sorry, that was an incomplete post. In among the ugly bits a guy can sometimes find fake ivory ot pearl stuff for the nicer guns. I have found fake stags several times and picked them up for friends. I found REAL stags twice for a steal.

Try Don Collins first... http://www.collinscraftgrips.com/
He doesn't list Beretta or Detonics, but could probably make them for you. He has corian grips in white and "aged" yellow, plus some very nice wood grips. He also works with Micarta, dymondwood, maple, walnut, etc. Alumagrips has their aluminum grips for the Beretta. These work well. I have a set on my 1911. Gungrips.net will add a logo of your choice to Aluma grips. They also laser-etch polymer "ivory" grips for the Beretta as well as do logos on wood and "pearlite" grips. Finding grips for the Detonics will be a challenge. They were never a huge seller and you'll likely have to inquire of each grip maker how much they will charge.

Ebay and Gunbroker. Also, there's usually a grip-guy at the gunshows I attend. Most probably have one of these folks.

I love that quote. Although, sometimes pearl grips can look elegant.

I like a nice set of pearl grips. Real pearl, not plasti-pearl. Some "bling-bang" I just can't resist.

Authentic Pearl grips/stocks would not likely survive the first discharge.

Note: There is a small chunk broken out of the bottom of the grip, but the pistol is almost 100 years old, so it may have been banged around a bit.

Mother of pearl is actually very stable, and holds up well to shooting.

My understanding is that Mother of Pearl grips that were done in years gone by were not SOLID MoP, they were laminated onto some other backing material, making them a lot stronger.

Sometimes the situation is just yelling at you to pick up a new hobby.
Git some faux ivory and make yer own. Go to Jantz supply for the material. Not hard and you will enjoy the project. |

Genuine pearl grips were seldom, if ever backed with another material. Jay Scott FAKE pearl grips were laminated over a more resilient plastic to keep them from cracking. Perhaps this is where the "backing" info came from.
MOP is brittle, but fairly strong. The "note" on the link above simply absolves the seller of replacement liability. MOP is one of the most beautiful natural handle materials, Patton notwithstanding. Many older Colts and S&Ws (and lesser brands) were offered with deluxe pearl grips-none backed. The reason MOP is not seen as often is that shells large enough for grips are much more difficult to obtain today. Again, Los- I post from genuine experience, not reading on the Internet. |

Rifleman-
The Jantz (actually made by Masecraft) imitation ivory looks really good and works easily, but it is much more fragile than real pearl or ivory. I have worked extensively with all of them. |

I probably would never have bought that gun, but my wife saw those grips and fell in love with it. It is very elegant. I'll bet it really looked sharp "back in the day" before the finish got scratched up and all.

H&R Revolver
I know this is an older thread, but hope someone can help. My Wife inherited her Grandfather's old H&R a 2nd Model, 3rd Variation "PREMIER", small frame .22 rim fire revolver. It is a nickeled 6" barrel gun. It had factory MOP grips, but got dropped, and one of the panels shattered. I have looked for replacements, but they are very rare. I am now looking for someone that might make a replacement panel for me. I am simply not set up to do this, and have never worked MOP. I am sure that what ever I did would end up looking like the North end of a South bound dog. Any suggestions you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Good luck with that. E-Bay and a google search for "H&R Grips" might yield some hits, but unlikely for genuine mother of pearl grips. If you find a pair, they'll be quite expensive - likely several times what the gun is worth.
Check with Bob's Gun Shop for wood or rubber grips. Numrich doesn't have grips for your model it appears. Vintage Gun Grips has reproduction grips available.
