Video: Shooting my Sandusky Silent Destroyer.

I went out shooting yesterday and took some video of myself shooting my Sandusky Silent Destroyer. Slapped the video together at home and put it up for your viewing pleasure.

Youtube: Having fun with my Ruger 77/44 Silent Destroyer Click to watch video.

Sandusky Comic Homepage This is my favorite online comic, very good artwork and very good writing. Check it out. John was kind enough to draw me some line art to put over the protective cover I made for the suppressor tube. Sandusky is the character on the right and Bunker is the character on the left who is about to get his nap ruined. I get as many questions about the artwork as I do the gun

Rounds are a Lee cast 214 grain SWC bullet over a charge of Winchester 231 powder driven at about 950 FPS. The first shot on my chronograph is a test shot from my 22/45 pistol to ensure that the Chronograph was working. If you look close you can catch a glimpse of the bullet passing over the chronograph.

I forgot to bring my shooting rest and the benches at the range are kinda crappy and don't allow a stable shooting position so I kept the target at 50 yards. Even with this rather wobbly shooting position I was able to consistently perform rapid fire onto the target. Given a good rest and slow-fire I can hit that same target consistently at 200 yards depending on wind conditions. With the subsonic velocity the trajectory is like a rainbow, shooting long range in the wind a challenge that I enjoy.

With my handloaded subsonic ammunition, this gun is incredibly quiet. Ear protection is completely unnecessary. Camera microphones do an incredibly poor job of recording suppressor performance, but I still hope you get a reasonable appreciation of the performance of this suppressor. Especially with the downrange clips showing the impact being clearly louder than that of the shot itself.

On the second clip with the camera downrange, when the target gets knocked over, I take the fourth shot into the Mountain Dew box on the post. The "Thump" you hear is the bullet punching a neat 44 caliber hole in the cardboard, a function of the SWC bullet.

50 yards downrange the shot is virtually inaudible as is the sound of me cycling the action. The camera only picks it up because of the lack of other background noise.

Enjoy.

It would except that, in that configuration, the gun is worth about $1600 Not something I want bonking around in the back of the pickup.

It's a regular Tom Denall "Silent Destroyer" conversion using a Ruger 77/44 in 44 mag as the base gun. The barrel is shortened to 9" and is not ported. The inner tube is permenently attached to the barrel to get it over 16" so it's a one stamp gun. The inner tube has 16 baffles. The outer tube is 20"x1.75 and functions as the blast chamber. The inner tube has large holes cut to vent most of the gas into the outer tube before the bullet passes the first baffle. The outer tube is mounted offset to the inner tube to allow a lower mounting of a scope.

I stuck with the factory barrel because I am going to be shooting cast bullets exclusively. A fast twist barrel works better with jacketed, but is not good for cast. The suppressor can be fully disassembled for cleaning and was designed specifically for shooting cast bullets.

For optics I have a Russian designed, Belarus made 6x42 POSP scope mounted. The extra height is very handy for making the longer shots. The Chevron reticle makes long range shooting very easy as well.

I can't remember if it's the 3rd or 4th Chevron that's the 200 yard mark. Perhaps I should write this stuff down. Top Chevron is 50 yards.

Cool! I have an Old gun rag that featured this silencer in it.... long before I had silencers of my own. It's got the coaxial tube right?

No, it has a non-coaxial outer tube, which functions as the blast chamber. The inner tube is coaxial to the barrel.

I want to do something like this with my .45 ACP VZ 24. I think a silenced bolt action rifle (ala delisle) is a great concept.

That it is. Part of what I think makes it so effective is using the space between the inner and outer tube as the blast chamber. You get long tube performance in a relatively short package.

Your welcome. The comic is on hiatus right now except for sporadic updates. Noki, the cougar that inspired the character Sandusky, died in April and John needed some time off. Right now he is getting some art put together for an art show in September.

So check up often because he's going to continue to strip. I'm doing my part to get him more readers.

Nice rifle, and I'll check out the webcomic. I read several webcomics, and one more good quality one is always worth the time.

I read about that and am going to keep it in my reading list. Sorry to hear about the loss of the big cat.
