I'm just starting in CAS and had a question.
I've just read the SASS Shooter's Handbook and here is what it states: "Any lever or slide action, tubular fed, exposed hammer rifle or carbine manufactured before 1899, or any reproduction thereof." It appears the Marlin 1894P (44 mag) is acceptable for CAS but it's not a reproduction of an actual pre-1899 model. Anybody know for sure? Second question: Anybody shoot a Vaquero Sheriff? I just bought one in glossy SS and ivory composite grips. I'm thinking about a 2-gun leather rig that will hold the Sheriff in a cross-draw with my Vaquero Bisley hanging at my right side. Thanks in advance for any responses. |

eagle-eyes,
I'm not into CASS (yet) but I've read on other threads that the 1894P would NOT be CASS legal because of the ported barrel. I could be wrong (I'm sure Ned Roundtree will set us BOTH straight if I am), but when all else fails a call or email to SASS would probably get the right information. Yes, ported barrel is a no-no. Check with your match director. But I'm sure other cowboys would complain about your selection. Even with the Cowboy Marlin II you have to remove or reverse the white diamond on the rear sight. But what can you do with ported barrel? That is not a cowboy rifle.
