profile crimp shaving brass
Loading 44 mag jhp w/cannelure. In an attempt to get a good tight crimp with a redding profile crimp die, there is a bit of brass being shaved off the mouth of the case about the width of a thick hair. Bullets shoot good and crimp looks good.Is this a problem, normal or what? Do I need to back off a little?

Yep, It Is Fairly Normal For Crimp Dies To Do This.
The die is actually breaking the outside edge of the case mouth by " filing " it off, as it were. It won't hurt a thing and the next time around it probably won't do it as the outside chamfer has been already done. Also, take a look and see if you can decrease the bell on the case when loading those jacketed bullets. That would help a bit, maybe...perhaps. I have been seeing this for 45 years now and really pay it no mind any more.

I'm Doing the Same Thing TOO
Hey,
I'm loading some 44mag with H100 18.4 grains, with the 300gr XTP. I'm doing the same thing too.The brass that's shaved off looks like a fine hair. But I can see that I'm getting a roll crimp on the bullet.I've got the RCBS dies. I thought I was doing something wrong too, glade to see that I'm not the only one doing this. |

Brass "wire"
+1 here! I get a fine brass "wire" at the mouth of my .357 magnums when I load a bullet that extends out beyond the case mouth. Most of what I load is target bullets that do NOT extend beyond the case mouth, and with those I don't get the fine brass shaving, but yes with the others.
Here, too, it's nice to know that "we are not alone."

suggest
Clean it off before firing (or it can accumulate and cause function woes).
I make jewelry from mine. Okay, not really.
