I've got a Mossberg 500 "persuader" that is used solely as a home defense weapon, but it may sometimes be used as a trunk gun. I like it.

However, the Mossberg 590 is calling me, really just for the cool factor. For my purposes, should I bother picking up a 590? How much tougher is the 590? Does it matter? My 500 cost me $187 at Wal-Mart, how much more value does the 590 have? How many of you think the extra $150-$200 for the 590 is/isn't worth it?

That $150-200 could buy lots of ammo and range time. Then, instead of looking good, you might BE good,and more capable of handling whatever you bought that shotgun for.

I'd say pass on the 590 if you've already got a 500. I have a 590 but if you're talking looking kewl then all you need to do, IMHO is slap on a heat shield (forget about the bayonet lug, it's not very useful and gets in the way of a weapon-mounted light) which you can buy for $20-30. Kewlness for 1/10 the price of a new gun.

I can't recall. Did the Persuader have an 8 round mag? Did it have the threaded magazine cap or the bolt to tighten down the barrel? If it didn't (doesn't) have an 8 round mag then yeah, get the 590.

If it does have a high cap mag, do you need a bayonet lug? Or a steel trigger gaurd [A1]? (Can't recall of the persuader had a steel one either.) As mentioned, if you like the heat shield, there are ones available for the 500.

I gotta say, however, I do have a few 590s and an M9 bayonet and it does look pretty kickass when its on one of them. As a side note, if you get an M9 for the 590, you might have to grind down a part of the mag cap to get it to fit. If you use an M7 bayo, you'll be OK without any modifications.

I have a 500 Persuader - it has a 7+1 capacity, and the barrel is affixed to the magazine tube via a threaded screw that is inserted into the end of the tube... not a threaded cap like the 590. Oh, it has a plastic trigger group too.

Some good places to buy Surefire Responders:

1. Lagger Pro (http://www.lagger-pro.com);
2. Maricopa Tactical (http://www.maricopatactical.com); and
3. Botach Tactical (http://www.botachtactical.com).

I have had good experiences with Lagger Pro. I have never ordered from Maricopa, although their Responder prices are excellent. Botach seems to give people problems but I have found that if you call first and make sure your item is in stock, they ship quickly and at a great price.

Best of my memory the main advantage of (most) 590s over (most) 500s was the ghost right rear sight. If you add it to the 500, you'd have most of the 590's functionality.

One thing I enjoy about my 590 is the parkerized finish, it holds up very well under adverse conditions, the 8 shell mag, bayolug, heatshield, steel trigger guard, top folding stock by Choateā„¢ and the six round side saddle. Has truely transformed this simple weapon into a tactical masterpiece. I would put my 590A1 up against any Scattergun tech. The only thing I dislike about the 590 is the sling swivel attached to the bayolug which makes it difficult to carry via tactical sling, as the shotgun wants to ride sideways instead of verticle, and I hate those so called tactical slings in which one must loop the sling around the barrel, IMHO that's just in bad taste.
