Jumping on to this thread...

Similar experience as previous members. Grandfather passed a couple years ago and my Grandmother just gave me a couple of his guns. One is a S&W 4046 40 cal - VDV9296. Just looking for a mfg. date if possible. Thanks!

As has been mentioned previously, the serial number info available for semi-autos is limited compared to revolvers, but (and this is a bit of a guess) it looks like the VDV prefix would make it late 1997.

Manufacture date of 586?

Can someone tell me the manufacture date of my 586 no dash.

ADN53XX serial no#

Also there is no M or 2 so that tells me that there is no MOD or L frame improvement mod. However I've been told that if the 586 was built after a particular date then it does not need the MOD. So if I can find out the built date then that would help.

Thanks

1983.

The recall was from an issue involving only a few guns and with a certain brand of 357 Mag ammo.
The primer metal would flow back into the firing pin hole and tie up the action. S&W's fix is to replace the firing pin bushing.
If you are not experiencing that problem then I would not worry about it.

Thanks Jim!

The gun wasn't that old when I bought in 1996 then. Interesting.

SN's ran from 1D1 in 1976 to 1D30000 in 1977.

Not quite pre-WW2, but close: 1947. S&W used the "S" prefix serial numbers on N-frames only from 1946 to 1970.

Dating semi-autos is a bit iffy due to limited information, but the VBH prefix would appear to place the gun within a year or two after 1994.

On the .38, that sn would put the gun in the 1972-73 time frame, which means it definitely should have a model number (they started numbering in 1957). The model number should be stamped on the part of the frame that's exposed when you swing the cylinder out - it's most likely a Model 10, but there are a couple of other possibilities. If it's a Model 10, then it will be either a 10-5 (tapered barrel) or 10-6 (heavy barrel).

I need help identifying the year and value of a revolver I got from my grandfather. I was told it was his sidearm in World War II. On the barrel it says "38 S&W Special CTG". The bluing is in very good condition, the gun still fires (although it has not been fired in 20+ years), and to the best of my knowledge, all parts are original. The serial number on the butt is 503109. Below are pictures of both sides of the gun.

Thank you for your assistance.

5 or 6 chambers in the cylinder? From the photos, it appears to be 5, which would make it a J-frame, most likely a Model 36, and from the sn the production date would be in the 1962 (sn 295000) to 1969 (sn 786544) time frame, with the shape of the thumb piece making it post-1966. All that would also be consistent with the ramped front sight, which is generally indicative of more modern production, and again from the photos (admittedly a bit difficult to tell) it appears to be a 3-screw, which would also be consistent with that time period. If that's the case, however, it should have the model number clearly stamped in the frame cutout, and it's obviously not possible that the gun was carried in WW2 - so I could be totally off base, but that's what it looks like to me.

I just bought a Smith-Wesson 625-8 Performance Center with the serial CRY****. Could anyone help me place the approx date of manufacture?

Also, does anyone else know if the 625 Jerry Miculek grips are any wider and more handfilling that the ugly technicolor grips that come with the gun?

Thank you.
