Got some 9mm, 147Gr, .355, new brass, ....best powder?
I would like some opinions on powders for 147 Gr JHP bullets. I have many powders but none of them are metioned in the latest Hornady manual. My older manuals dont even mention 147 Gr bullets. You thoughts will be appreciated.

Lymans 49 edition, 147 full metal jacket. OAL listed at 1.115"
If your shooting XTPs the OAL will be .015"shorter. The frictional coefficient should be about the same as JHP. You could work with this data if you can't find anything else. I'd shave a couple tenths of a grain off the max if I were you just to be safe. min max Titegroup 3.2gr @ 914 to 3.6gr @ 983 31,900 Bullseye 3.4gr @ 871 to 3.9gr @ 971 29,900 700x 2.8gr @ 766 to 3.6gr @ 949 30,700 231 3.5gr @ 855 to 4.1gr @ 957 27,500 Unique 3.7gr @ 873 to 4.5gr @ 1039 29,100 Power pistol 4.5gr @ 960 to 5.0gr @ 1043 32,400 Universal 3.1 gr @ 778 to 3.5gr @ 924 29,200 N340 3.9gr @ 935 to 4.4gr @ 1012 32,200 WSF 3.5gr @ 790 to 4.4gr @ 983 30,800 Tru Blue 5.0gr @871 to 5.6gr @ 1034 32,500 HS-6 4.8gr @ 866 to 5.8gr @ 1046 30,600 AA#7 6.0gr @ 852 to 7.2gr @ 1014 29,000 Blue Dot 5.3gr @ 864 to 6.6gr. @1052 28,600 Happy reading |

Anything in the medium to slow range for 9mm will work. AA#5, #7, WSF, Unique, Silhouette, True Blue, Power Pistol, the list goes on. Really you can use a faster powder too but you'll starting dipping down into the high 800s velocity wise.
Look at the powder manufacturers website for load data, everyone publishes a 147gr jacketed load.

I use Viht N-340 because it is shockingly clean-burning. Well worth the premium price, and it is rarely sold out.

I would never use anything faster than Universal or Unique with 147 jacketed bullets.

I use 3N38, specifically with the hornaday 147 grain XTP. 3N38 was hard to find before all this buying frenzy.
I bought 4 pounds of 3N38, and was able to duplcate the higher velocities that some of the really expensive 147 grain SD ammo have. For 147 grain FMJ and 147 grain cast flat point I am using Power Pistol.
