.....today I took out the 1851 for the first time. I kept the loads at 22 grains using .454 round balls. The gun does shoot high as many have said. I used pistol wads and found bore butter will not work to cover the cylinders as it melts and is useless. One thing that I found surprising was the fact the recoil feels similar to a .22 to me. I was expecting more. The only thing I need now is .....a second revolver!

Wads are good but bore butter isn't useless. It gets in the recess between ball and chamber. Doesn't take much.

Yep, Bore Butter is messy when warm. On the other hand, you can get more shots per cylinder before the need to clean than without it.

Plus it has that nice menthol smell!

And doesn't the burnt smell of black powder smell so nice, funky and special compared to smokeless?

Welcome to the dark side. I'm sure your BP revolver collection well multiply.

Greasing the front of the rb has always been a messy proposition. If you do a search here on "grease cookies" you well find that many of us make your own concoction that is placed between powder and ball. You get the added seal and lube, plus they do not melt in the heat of the day.

Just kiddin'.

I bought my first BP revolver in January...a Ruger Old Army with adjustable sights. When February came I decided I needed a Ruger Old Army with fixed sights so then there were two. When March came I decided I needed a Remmie 1858 so then there were three. I don't know what they call this soot disease but it seems to beckon for more BP revolvers. Now that it is April I can only wonder what will be next. I will try to fight the urge...must not think about BP....must fight urge...must not look at BP catalogs...must resist...

...oh crap...I think I see a 1862 Pocket Police in my future...

I see an 1858 Army steel frame in my near future. $219 at Cabela's right now. What are some other decent web sites to order black powder from?

Yessssss...resistance is futile...turn to the dark side....You can't go wrong with $219 for that CCH 1858 Remmie.

Here is my March purchase...it just showed up yesterday. This is actually a Uberti made 1858 with Charcoal Blue finish. The Cabela's I believe is a Pietta. $219 is a great price. Get it!!!!!
