Article Ideas

I've got a copule article ideas that I've just cooked up.

1) "Battle of the Battle Rifles"

This article could have a group of shooting gurus put the top .308 battle rifles to the test in a competition designed to put a .308 caliber weapon through it's paces.

Areas of concern could include:

-Recoil and muzzle control
-Magazines (availability and prices)
-Sights
-Scopability
-Price of the weapoin
-Reliability
-Ease of disassembly/cleaning
-Weight
-Accuracy (no "match grade" versions allowed)

The weapons tested:

DSA FAL
Armalite AR-10
Springfield M1A
HK 91 (or a well built clone)

2) An article that debates which is better for police general issue: The carbine or the shotgun.

3) There's been talk about this in the rifle forums, so how about an article discussing the real-world use of intermediate rifle cartridges for home defense, in regards to overpenetration? Test weapons would include an AR-15, an AK of decent manufacture, maybe even the M1 Carbine. Ball, hollow point, and soft-point rounds could be tested.

4) An article discussing Robinson's VEPR II line of AKs. These are great guns and should get more press time. Some reviews would be nice, too.

5) Maybe an article about the OICW? Not some fluff piece that takes everything the manufactuers say for gospel truth, but an article that weighs the pros and cons of the weapon, discusses whether it can really perform as advertised (in your opinion) with the current technology, how useful it really is, etc.

6) I'd really like to see an article disscussing the actual usefulness of full auto fire in service rifles, be they in intermediate or full power cartridges. Bringing up issues like ammo consumption, lowered hit rate, etc. Discuss whether 3-round or 2-round burst is of any utility at all (as opposed to a semiauto only weapon).

7) Weapons of the past used in modern shooting scenarios. Lug a Thompson through that SMG class instead of an MP5. You get the idea.

8) An article discussing possible future developments in firearms technology, such as caseless ammo, energy weapons, gauss rifles, etc.

How's 25% ?

I can tell you for myself that one of my SHOT follow-ups is with Robinson Armament Company.

Also, I was offered a Voere caseless rifle to review and test out, but I haven't had a chance to get to it yet. Although I know the ammo is available, I haven't found anyone who is actually importing the weapon.

Thanks for the ideas....

How about:

--9mm vs. .45acp
--revolver vs. self-loader
--SIG vs. Glock
--and, of course, which flowered shirt is the most tactical

Stop me if we've heard this all before in Soldier of Fiction, et al.

A review of Colt's current line-up would be cool. Will they send out weapons for review?

You should put an American made AK in there.

Sounds like the makings of a book, not an article!

What I would like to see is SWAT use their super gun magazine powers to get ahold of some of the new groovy guns that were shown at SHOT Show. I would think that a review of the Rohrbaugh tiny 9mm, or a review of the Barrett imported Tavor would be right up SWAT's alley.

And after meeting Ashley, I also wouldn't mind reading about him going through a tactical rifle class with a 30-30.

But Nightcrawler, some of your other ideas have been beaten to death. No offense. Shotgun vs. Carbine for example. And Chuck Karwan did a big battle rifle shoot off a couple of years ago in the Guns Combat Annual. (good article).

I can say in all honesty that since I've subscribed to SWAT I've actually started reading gun magazines again. I used to subscribe to several, but once I discovered TFL I found that I could get information that was more unbiased and faster. But the quality of SWAT has been excellent and very educational lately, and I've very glad I subscribed.

As a result of SHOT the following is planned:
- Review of Accuracy International's new entry level Sniper Rifle.
- A WAY COOL review by Clint of a new $7,000 rifle...thanks to Rob.
- An Ashley challenge to take the TR Urban Rifle course with an out of the box lever 30-30.
- Article comissioned by Robbi Barkman (Robar) on alternate finishes for firearms
- Lots of products for Flint's column.

Additionally, we've approached a number of notables in various fields and offered them feature space in the mag.

Ewok_Guy - What exactly *is* that?

Looks like an SLR-95 with a pistol grip. (Bulgarian)

We stopped & talked to Rich the first day of Shot Show & signed up for the mag.

Left info on the Black Rifle Convention May 31 to June 2 www.ar15-convention.com

I think Rich said you had a guy near St Louis who could cover the convention.

We will contact ref a classified ad.
