Hammer rivet - S&W J Frame

I recently bought a used S&W J frame Chief’s Special made in 1955. The hammer rivet came out and prevents the firing pin from reaching completely through the firing pin hole. I need to replace this rivet. What is the proper technique for staking this rivet in place?

Assuming the rivet is in place, just protruding a bit, set the hammer down flat on a vise or other solid steel surface, and drive the rivet with an appropriate size center punch. This will expand that end of the rivet. Turn the hammer over and do the same on the other side.

This can be done with the hammer in the gun, but make sure the hammer is back all the way and block it with a wood peg so you don't accidentally harm the cock notch or trigger. (Oh, and make sure the gun is not loaded - my lawyer makes me say things like that.)
