How Many Shells Will Fit In A .50 Cal Can?
Apparently seven boxes of 25 2-3/4" 12 ga. rounds will fit into a .50 cal ammo can. But how many five-round boxes will -- anyone know offhand?

well - 7 times 5 is 35 - if your previous assertion is correct, then the following is also

But I am betting that no matter how you purchase the cans and shells... it will never work out "square" like hotdogs coming in packs of 8 and the buns coming in bags of 10

LOL
Guys, this isn't a trick question like how many jelly-beans fit in Rosie O'Donnel's head. One can pack 5-rnd boxes very differently than 25 round boxes in the confines of a .50 cal ammo can. Same goes for loose shells which I suppose is also an, and maybe a better, option... Anyone KNOW the answer offhand!? Gehr |

Is the number of boxes "of" (read "containing") 25 rounds a red herring, since your question concerns the 5 round boxes that could be empty?

No, its not a red herring or anything fishy at all. U guys slay me. This ain't a Rubic's Cube exactly. Because of their size and shape only seven boxes of 25 rounds fit into a .50 cal can and there is room to spare -- just not for another full box of 25. The smaller individual size of five-round boxes means that they can be arranged in more variation and more should fit in. Loose, there'd be even MORE variation and less airspace taken up. SOMEONE must have actually done this!? Gehr |

At one time time I had .50 and .30 cal cans stuffed in the closets full of 12 and 20 ga, .30-30, .30-06 hand gun calibers and .22 lr...
I could have told you exactly how many rounds were in each except for the .22lr which I counted by weight not volume. But, sir, that was 21-23 years ago and in that time I have consumed tens of thousands (if not more) of beers and a few bottles of both taxed and un taxed liquor... Wouldn't have a guess. But it is nice to see you didn't get your shorts torqued with the obviously humor intended replies as some folks would... brent |

Yes, I've done it. But the number of 5-round boxes a .50 can will hold varies with the overall length of the shell- even so-called 2.75" shells can vary in OAL depending on crimp type etc. Only way to tell is to start stackin' and fill 'er up. Even if the can won't hold as many, I'd rather store the 5-round boxes as units rather than as loose ammo.

Buy me the can and the boxes of 12 gauge and I will stack them every which way and report back on the maximal number.

KlawMan;
Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you. I couldn't find your address anywhere to send everything. I was also embarassed to admit I didn't know what "maximal" meant. But you're the kind of guy who makes me proud to have stayed on this forum -- thanks brother. After exhaustive study, preparation and analysis I had to determine for myself an answer I was confident in. With a higher level of certitude than Anthony Weiner had, I can say with certainty that a .50 cal Ammo can will only hold seven 25-round boxes of American 2-3/4" shotgun shells but will hold 40 five-round boxes with only enough room for another coupla loose shells. If you want something done right... 175 rounds of Federal "Military" 00 Buckshot out, 200 rounds of Remington 0 Buck in. Gehr |

The 50BMG can will hold 100 rounds linked and 150 rounds loose, or 840 rounds of 5.56mm in 10 round stripper clips. The 7.62 can will hold aprox 1500-1600 Remington 240 grain 44 magnum hp bullets.

Thanks Jaguar.
By copy of this to TheKlawMan I am asking him to keep a list, check it twice, and start a sticky with the Mods as soon as we have enough vetted info for everyone. My own next contribution: 560 rounds of .223 on strippers in 30-rnd boxes, plus a mag loading spoon, including 20+ loose rounds, will fill a .30 caliber ammo can. If you, or anyone else, "can" get us more info such as this, TheKlawMan has his work cut out for him. Thanks in advance TheKlawMan. I love you guys. Loose 12 g WAA
Loose 12 g WAA - about 200+. Not dumped in loose, but laid out, one by one, in a pattern. 200 would fit with room left over.

No doubt of that -- they'd pack more like a double-stack magazine. I chose to leave them in their individual 5-rnd boxes for a few reasons. Same with those M855's when I condensed four cans into three...
