I budget for and buy ammo on a regular basis. I have a decent supply and will not pay extreme prices. Most local stores have little ammo, and are limiting the number of boxes you can purchase. Haven't seen much price gouging, slight increases or none at all.
My Black Powder shooting usually is 50-60% of my shooting, now its probably 75%. Gotta save the ammo I have until its available again.

If everybody who wants ammo is able to buy ammo, prices will fall. If supply meets demands. If supply exceeds demand, prices will fall farther and faster.

Luckily ammo isn't a commodity completely like gas and will in the long term ammo demand will slow and curb the amount of inflation, but the inflation brought on due to the massive demand will remain. Nothing is basic in economics when human beings are involved.

Indeed time will tell. Lets see what things are six months from now.
For my own curiosity I've set up an excel sheet and will weekly track Federal .22 boxes on gunbroker. This could be fun. Maybe I missed my calling as a commodities trader. |

Nah, because you could then use your "stocks" for a lot of fun in .22. I thought it would be a little weird of me to buy 1,000 rounds of .22, when I didn't have one yet... Turns out I was wrong...

I think most of them if they would get their eyes off the end of their noses and look ahead they are going to make it lot harder on themselves in the long run. It would be interesting for someone to take the time to stalk a local Walmart. Not to buy ammo but to observe and take notes on who makes the biggest purchases. Maybe even peek into the stock room and make sure the ammo makes it off the truck in the pallets and that the pallets make it to the shelves. If I ever come across any aquaintances bragging about flipping ammo, I may give them a piece of my mind. As I said I don't care what they are doing in the short term. It is the damage they are doing in the long term. |

You didn't offend anyone. I merely pointed out that we have different opinions.
Everyone here is allowed an opinion. It's called dialogue. We're allowed to engage in dialogue unless the discussion turns to politics. Then we're only allowed monologue. |

Re: Ammo at inflated prices. Are you buying it?
I just bought 500 rounds of Estate for 110.00 from a buddy.I buy a couple boxes of 9mm target loads from a local gunshop every once in a while when the price is fair and just to replenish what I shoot.Haven't been buying rifle ammo at all.I don't think there's an ammo shortage I think there's a customer surplus.

Heck no...its impossible to find cheap ammo too; Today AIMsurplus had PMC Bronze 223 @ $8.00 per 20 and it was out of stock in under 2 mins..

Supply will come back slowly but surely, but it will take some time and will require people to calm down with buying too much even if they don't need it in the immediate future.
My local gun ranges now have 223 in stock for normal prices ($12/box of 5.56) which is what they used to sell them before the panic. Of course they limits are still there to keep hoarders from buying them all. Unfortunately 22lr is still hard to find locally, and anyone selling it privately is asking too much. $50+ for a brick? C'mon... |

I remember when 50 rounds of 45 ACP plinking ammo was 15.99.
Now If you get a box for 20, you're happy. Most places charge 30-34. |

Heh. I was talking about ammo with Pops earlier today when I came home with a couple cases of light field loads for work.
He asked what a brick of .22 cost and I told him how it was impossible to find and when you did find it, the price was astronomical. He went digging in his gun bag and came out with a brick of Federal .22 hollowpoints, probably from about 2000/1999, with the Ace Hardware $8.35 sticker still on it. I laughed and told him that his daugther picked quite possibly the worst time to decide she liked shooting.

Foghorn, the scalping will end when supply meets demand. But that does not mean anything about regular retail pricing.

That's what we're talking about, viz. scalper's prices. Retailers like Midwayusa and Walmart have not gouged anybody.

All the profits opportunists have made through this will be lost over the next several years when they have to pay more money for ammo that used to be affordable.
The only sad part is that the rest will have to pay this extra money too, even though we did not contribute to the shortage. The ammo manufacturers are not our friends. There is no patriotic feeling among them to help gun owners. They are in business to make money. They have watched and watched while a middle market has been created by opportunists. They see that this ammunition is changing hands at elevated prices. They would be idiots not to increase their prices. I suppose you could call it bittersweet justice. |

Ammo manufacturers haven't increased their prices. It would be stupid of them to. They don't want to be left with a ton of extra inventory when the panic ends. They also want to keep customers and retailers happy. They know what ammo is going for these days, and anything extra they charge is going to get added to that price (leading to a drop in sales). You seem to think there are going to be long lasting effects of the panic and people using it for profiteering. In a year, things will be back to normal, and ammo prices won't have changed (except to keep up with inflation).
AR's are already becoming plentiful (remember a month ago when they seemed to be non-existant?). I saw a Bushmaster AR (sorry, can't remember model or anything off the top of my head, likely their entry level gun) for $699 last weekend. I asked them about it, and they said they're only selling one or two a day. That same gun, I know was going for around $1300 in my area a month or two ago. Guns are normalizing quicker because they aren't consumable, and they require a greater investment. Ammo will catch up. Ammo is still scarce, but give it a few months, and you'll see things normalize. It's the kind of thinking that "Oh no, prices aren't ever going to drop again, I need to buy NOW!" that is part of the problem. The only thing we are seeing right now is the law of supply and demand doing it's thing. Demand is at an all time high. Supply hasn't changed. Therefore prices will go up. |

Why buy a gun if you can't get any ammo for it. That is the most likely reason for the cooling off of gun sales. ( not quite there yet though).

Except in the past two weeks, it's been easier and easier for me to find .223/5.56. A month ago, I couldn't find it anywhere...and I looked basically everywhere. Last weekend, every gun store I went to, with the exception of Sportsman's Warehouse had quite a bit available, and only one store had it priced outrageously ($1 a round at the cheapest). One store was selling milspec 5.56 at $8 for 20. Considering it was tough to find anything cheaper than $7 for 20 prior to the panic, I'd say everything is cooling down. Granted, they all had limits (usually 3 boxes per customer, per caliber), but there was a ton of stock available.
I've said it many times. This is temporary. It wasn't permanent in 08/09, it won't be permanent now. We're on the downhill side of this. I couldn't tell you when things will be better, but I imagine by the end of the year, we will all be wondering why everyone was panicking so badly. Is it still bad today? You betcha. Will it be this bad in the near future...nah, it's already cooling down. |

Bought a box of PMC Bronze 40 &W for about $22 yesterday. The shop owner was complaining about not being able to find ammunition for his store. I told him most everyone is short on ammunition unless they charge a fortune for it and he said he refuses to do that.
I sure wish PMC would start loading 41 mag again. Used to be my favorite ammo for the price. |
