Finally want to build a remmy 700
I'm looking to take a MIL/MOA precession rifle class in Jan and need to get me a rifle. I've been putting it off for long enough and what really started it was the Dick's rem 700 deals for the Varmint. I went to their website and couldn't find that model, other than SPS Varmint which I guess is it.
Going to be a all around purpose rifle. But first a precision rifle, never had a nice bolt gun so its time to make it happen. I'll be looking to change out parts on my own to see how it effects the rifle and learn about it. Bed the stock after I replace it with something better, maybe trigger job. Get nice rail/glass/rings are a must. Off the shelf Remington what would be the better platform to start off with? Looking to shoot out to 600 and go out to 1k when have enough experience. Need a bull or heavy barrel, but as for that and the model to get I'm clueless. Thanks Dustin Last edited by Djstorm100; November 19, 2012 at 08:20 PM. |

The SPS Tactical or Varmint should both work. The varmint has a 26, and the tactical has a 20. Both in relatively cheap stocks. I'd say buy either one and drop it into a Bell and Carlson or HS precision stock and you'll be good to go.

Is there one better than the other? Really like to get 1:10 twist vs 1:12.

I thought they were both 1:12 honestly I'm more a Savage guy. The varmint will give a little more velocity. I think with the longer barrel the 1:12 will better stabilize the heavier bullets than say if you got the 20 but not sure.

If you want to go to 1k you really should go with the 26 over the 20 inch barrel.
There is a great article on barrel length in tactical applications though it limits the .308 to about 600 yards, this is with 20" barrel. Recommends the .300 Win Mag for 1k and gets there via a 22" barrel. Edit: Found the article. It's a good read. http://www.tacticaloperations.com/SWATbarrel/ Last edited by ripnbst; November 20, 2012 at 08:52 PM. |
