Reboring The Barrel

If I decided to have the barrel on my Hawken re bored, what caliber would it change to. Would re boring weaken the barrel walls because they would be thinner?

Rebore

Be sure to take it to an experienced black powder gunsmith.

Hawkens come in all kinds of reproductions, so it is difficult to decide what you have, but it may work. If you have one of the common repros, it might be possible to go from .45 cal. to .50 cal or from .50 to .54. Rebore is only part of the job necessary. Keep in mind, it would also require rifling.

These can be some pretty expensive operations. You might consider buying a new barrel of the calibel you want. Check that option first. There is a good chance you can get a far superior barrel to the original one you have.

Good Luck..

It is a .50 and a Hawken Frontier. Probably around 20 years old. if re-bored to a .54 that seems to take away a lot of barrel. How much does something like that cost? I would definitely take the more cost efficient route with buying a new barrel as an option.

for the cost of a rebore job, you could buy 3 replacement barrels from deer creek.

Give them a call, dont waste your money on reboring it.

+1 get another barrel ^

Too much scope for going wrong reboring yours, if it does weaken the barrel or just not work properly (you aren't happy with the outcome) you will have to get another barrel anyway..... Go the cheaper/better option, IMO

Some one had to.

Gota ask why? The last three BPs cost me 150.00 for all three. I just about believe you can get a used BP in 54 for less then the bore job.

Good well I am going to shoot it some more and if it does poorly I will probably look to getting another barrel then. The only thing that is a bummer is the barrel on it now is nickel and I would hate to lose it.

These 2 barrel makers specialize in reboring and refreshing muzzle loader barrels. It used to cost about $100.
Either could make it into a smooth rifle for less money.

When barrels are rebored or re-rifled, sometimes the gunsmith will insert a liner as opposed to cutting new groves into the freshly bored out bore. Thus, the overall thickness many not change at all. It all depends. Ask the barrel maker and he'll tell you what he can do for you.

I have no idea how well or even if they do Black powder types of rifling, but I've had good luck with Clearwater Reboring. They did two revolver barrels for me, and have been very happy with the outcomes.

However, I know that they have changed their name of the gunshop...
Just look it up on the net.

I lent my TC Hawken to a "friend."
He kept it two years, just wouldn't return it when I asked.
When I finally got it back, he hadn't cleaned it properly, the barrel was ruined.
I got a friend at a machine shop to drill it out.
I just bought a drill bit at a hardware store. It is about a .53 diameter bit.
My buddy welded the six inch bit onto 30 inches of 3/8 steel rod, making a 36 inch drill bit.
He fit the barrel, and the bit, into this giant green machine.
A little tube squirted machine oil into the barrel, while it was drilled out to the larger size. Took about 20 minutes.
I don't know what it would have cost, my buddy did it for free.
I had to polish it up quite a bit, but it made a nice little shotgun.
With number 12 shot it is hell on the carpenter bees.
You could make a larger gauge shotgun from a .50 barrel
