Ithaca Help

I just acquired a shotgun in pretty good condition. It is an SKB XL 3000 semi-auto which I understand is basically an Ithaca. I don't have a manual or anything for it and I was trying to get the barrel off today. I unscrewed the lug on the grip and slid off the grip, then from what I understand on must semi-autos the barrel should just slide off, but when I went to take it off, it came out about an inch then stopped, I slid it back and forth a few times to see if it was just hung up, but no luck. What am I doing wrong? Am I just being too gentle with it?
