Hp38 for 9mm
Hey, I'm just starting to reload and I would like to start making ammo. for just shoot for the range. I would like to know what the min. that i could have in a round for Hp38/9mm luger. I know the data has 4.1gr-5.3gr (I think), but could I have 3.5gr? Also any tips on Lee Pro 1000 problems with the auto-primers. It works sometimes, but it doesn't prime correctly and something doesn't prime at all.
Thanks, Kevin |

3.5 grains should shoot. No guarantee it will operate any particular semi-auto, but it will shoot.
Pro 1000's work well for some, but are prone to grief for others. I don't have one, so that's about all I can tell you. Check out the help videos on Lee's site to see if your issue is covered. You can also call them and ask about it? I'm sure folks on here who own one will be of more help. You can probably try the board's search feature as I've seen these issues come up in other threads.

Here's a small sample of 2 weights in 4 bullet styles, to get an idea of the overall loadings.
Hodgdon's Web (last visited, 01-19-2011) data: 115 gr. Speer GoldDot = 4.7 - 5.1 | AOL = 1.124"Lyman's 48th: 115 gr. Hornady Hp/XTP = 3.5 - 4.9 | AOL = 1.090"I am currently loading 124 gr. Rem Golden Sabers with HP-38/Win 231. I shoot these out of my KelTec P11. My P11 cycled fine with loads from 3.8 gr. to 4.4 gr. with an AOL of 1.127". I settled upon 4.2 gr. of HP-38 as the optimum load for my particular handgun. Having said that, some of us might be better able to help, if we knew what bullet you were going to be using and what handgun you are shooting. |

Thanks you both for your reply. I'm just starting to make a few test round. I'm so far using a 115gr .355/Hp38 3.5gr for a 9mm Luger and using a 9m gauge. I'm just reloading target rounds only for my Keltec P9, and Smith and Wesson 9m Sigma. The best site I could find for Lee Pro 1000 for videos is http://www.sanfranciscoliberalwithagun.com/pro1000.html. Great site, I Google everyone trying to see if there a fix for the auto-prime for the Lee Pro 1000 and couldn't find anything that would help, but I did order a Lee Hand Primer XR that I just got today and works great. I plan to test out my rounds on Thursday

I have a pro 1000 set up for 357. What I started doing is taking a small pick
and putting lite pressure on the primers with the pick. That lets me feel the primmer feed into the slot. This will slow up the reloading time a little at first but until you get use to it. It is better than dumping power into the press and having to clean it good. |

3.5g W231 is what works well under 147g lead.......might not function under 115g.

My load
I have using HP38 for about a year... it's worked just fine for all of my pistols 380, 45 ACP and 9MM.. I have a 9mm HK USP in which I have been loading 4.8 gr of HP38 115 gr. Remington FMJ bullets @ 1.140 case length with no problems.
As always I started lower 4.2 and those worked as well.. but the 4.8 was more accurate for my gun yours may be different. The press I use is a Lee single stage w/Lee dies. Good Luck! |
