A Gun Ban That Misfired

I put this in L&CR, because there's a whole lot of discussion of gun bans, magazine bans, etc. right now. It's an article by Jeffrey Scott Shapiro, who prosecuted gun crimes in DC from 2007-2009, and it details some of the ways in which DC's handgun ban failed.

The decline in murders in D.C. since the ban was lifted is not something the media ever mentions. Thanks for the link.

I used to live close to DC during the years that they averaged over a murder a day. It needs to be remembered that Mayor Marion Berry hired alot of new police officers, unfortunately for the city, most of them had criminal records. Straight from Lorton Prison to the streets of DC. I avoided DC like the plague. I was acually close enough to hear the gun fire.

The decline in D.C.s murder rate has more to do with the national trend than Heller, as it is still exceedingly difficult to obtain a firearm permit and to register a firearm in the City. A D.C. journalist documented the 17 steps and the months it took her before she could legally possess a firearm. Notably, DC has only one FFL and all he does is transfers--there are no gunstores in city limits. She had to get her required training out of town, she had to have a mass of paperwork submitted, she had to shop out of town. These regs have been the subject of continuing llitigation, but have been eased recently due to her series of articles.

Emily Miller's quest to get a firearm for personal protection after the Heller decision is a very good read......

Facts don't matter to anyone on emotional issues.

Their whole platform is built off of lies and mis-information. There is no reasoning with these people. They honestly fear a population that can defend itself. We all need to work together, no matter if an AWB passes or not, to get these people out of office. Vote, spread the word, and make your voice heard. We have the Consitution of the United States of America on our side. It is a fight we cannot afford to lose.

Here is the single most important point in this "national debate" we're having.

Problem is that we're the dummies who keep wanting to be rational and look at facts. And they're the ones "ginning up" the fear factor.
