Reloading Setup Recommendation
What would you guys recommend for a press that will load pistol and rifle at a pretty good speed? Also what Powder handling systems do you like? I want something that will last a long time!
I already have a single stage that I use for rifle, but I would like something with a little more speed! I will be loading .308, 8mm, and 9mm I approximately shoot 40 8mm, and .308 a week, and 150 9mm a week. Budget= anything reasonable....under 1,000 Last edited by 308sc; June 13, 2008 at 03:42 PM. |

Tell us more about you first.
What cartridges are you going to load? How much are you shooting of each per week/month or year? What type of budget do you have?

I'm listening. I want to load from 9mm to 30-06. The handgun stuff I really don't care about as I only shoot 50 yds. Some of the rifle cartridges, I'd really like to dial in on like the .223, 243 and some .30's.
Lee did me well in the past and Dad loaded tons of shotshells on one of their early turret loaders. Unless someone can convince me otherwise I'm going back to what I know.

Look here for a good comparison between Dillon, Hornady, and Lee progressive presses: http://www.comrace.ca/cmfiles/dillon...Comparison.pdf

leave enough room on your bench to mount another single-stage in tandem and buy a spare set of shell holders. if you have a shooting buddy help you seat/crimp you'll be able to crank out some pistol rounds.

Well not knowing how much more speed you are looking for or how much time you have to reload here is my suggestion. A Lee classic turret will load at least 2 to 3 times faster than your single stage press. A progressive will load at least 5 to 6 times faster. All can be bought for under $1,000. The Lee CT will cost around $250 to $300 unless you have dies, scale and a lot of other things needed for reloading then it could be bought a lot cheaper. A progressive will cost around $450 and go up from there.

Extraordinary press in a little rough condition but should clean up OK if you want it to look pretty. Leaves plenty of money in your budget for dies, scale, powder measure, calipers, etc.

Dillon RL550. You can use the dies you already have. I would recommend loading up several weeks [or a month] of ammo as changing cartridges takes a little time.
