The Quarterly "Where is everything?" thread -- guns, ammo, primers, powder, etc.

Please note - this thread is a continuation of the original "Where is Everything ..." thread started during the period when components, ammo, and other related items were scarce, expensive, and often unobtainable at any price. Based on a suggestion by johnwilliamson062, and due to the original thread becoming lengthy and unwieldy, we decided to start the topic over. It will probably be renewed on a quarterly basis until the need for it no longer exists.

With the latest run on firearms, magazines, ammunition, reloading supplies, and other shooting accoutrements, there has been a corresponding rise in the number of "WHERE IS EVERYTHING?" threads.

This thread will hopefully do two things:

1. It will give everyone a place to discuss the low stock and high prices we are currently seeing in the firearms world.

2. It will hopefully give everyone a central place where they can report finding supplies (locally or otherwise).

What this thread will NOT be, however, (and I can't stress that strongly enough) is a thread for expounding:

pet conspiracy theories about how the government is buying up all of the ammo to keep it out of the public's hands.
how manufacturers are creating a false shortage designed to drive prices up.
complaints about how this company or that store is gouging.

Posts along those lines will be deleted and the poster may receive either a warning or a sanction.

We know that threads will still be started in other forums. At the discretion of the moderators for those forums, threads may be moved to this one. If you feel a thread or post should be moved here, but it's in a now-closed thread elsewhere at TFL, please contact your friendly neighborhood mod.

I've just now got into shooting my firearms regularly. I enjoy it as a hobby and a past time. I must admit though, it becomes hard to shoot without any rounds. I am not really needing any LR Ammo, as my bolt-action doesn't eat up that much, I do however, need short .22. I was passed down a revolver yesterday, one that my grandpa owned. I literally have 2 .22 short rounds for it, and that was in the gun when I received it. I'm not needing it to hoard, but a box of 50 rounds every few weeks is not such a tall order. But it does get kinda frustrating when I see 4 people go into Academy and buy all of their short ammo available, and then give it to one person. How are you going to shoot that much? I would be happy to get atleast 1 box so my dad and I could shoot it for once. Anyway, sorry for the rant, but would someone mind explaining this to me? I've been to 4 stores this week, all who said no on Short.

I also would like to find shorts. I used to find them when LR was gone. Now they are both gone.

I have a rifle that shoots either and frankly the shorts work well to keep the crows off my garden.

They are also pretty quiet. I wonder if shorts will become a round of the past.

Demand is high right now and production is maxed out. We just have to wait until production catches up with demand. Prices will be what they are, so, if we want it from that particular vendor, we will pay their price.

I managed to find some .22 Short rounds for my revolver today, hoping to shoot it some today with my dad. They were a little bit overpriced, at $5 for a box if 50 but some is better than none. Just hope I can make them last and still get some practice in, until this shortage ends anyway.

I have not seen any sort of .22 ammo; Short, long, long rifle or magnum in my area (Winston-Salem/Lexington) for at least 2 months. Gander Mtn, Dick's, Bass
Pro and 2 locals all look at me like I'm asking for a kidney.

But when I go to the Baltimore area (Arnold/Annapolis), I can usually find .22 LR in bulk packs at Bass Pro. They'll have a limit on how many etc, but at least they have it. I want to say it was around .06/rd, so not gouged by any means.

Is the shortage regional? I can find 9mm, .223, and anything else, but .22 LR.

I think it's regional. Over here in Alexander County it's virtually impossible to find but in Wilkes county I can find some.

I'm not aware of anyone making 22 Short except CCI. I suspect it is going to disappear sooner or later.

I've been scoring quite a few components lately, over the past 30 days or so, I have bought locally 2 lbs. of Varget, 2 lbs. of Win 748, 2 lbs. of Blue Dot, and several thousand primers. Also online bulk lots of 230 grain FMJ, 230 grain HP, Star 9mm brass, 147 grain 9mm FMJ, 147 grain XTP, 1k LC processed once fired 5.56 brass.

Also found a few things I have been waiting for some time for an opportunity to purchase.

240 grain XTP (44 magnum)
Hornady 75 grain .224 BTHP Match (500)

I had been limiting my shooting and putting money aside that I would normally be spending on shooting or reloading components in the hopes that I could pounce if I saw some, while buying all this over 30-40 days wasn't exactly pouncing, It looks like I'll be in for an increase in trigger time pretty soon.

In Southeastern Idaho, even the podunk gas stations are starting to get .22 LR, 9mm, and .45 Auto back on the shelves.

Powder and high-demand bullets are a different story...

I finally picked up some Benchmark and AR-Comp powder from Bass Pro and even got some Varget powder from a gun show yesterday still no 22LR to be had although I heard if I was willing to wake up earlier and check Wal-Mart on Tuesdays at 7am I might have a chance at scoring some.

I saw a breakdown of suply that basically said there are 8 boxes of bulk (4000 rounds or so) per walmart per day. Seems like a lot, but really not that. One person going nutz over it could eat up a large chunk of your local supply.

Per my local Wal-Mart sporting goods employee she says that they get a few boxes of it about twice a week, she said that it usually gets put out early in the morning and its usually the same three or four guys standing around waiting for it and they buy up as much as they can every time. I don't have the luxury of being able to be at Wal-Mart every day at 7am I have a little thing called work that gets in the way.....lol

the 8 boxes a day is the entire supply. It is related to walmarts only to demonstrate supply in a model most of us can understand. Saying there are so many thousand boxes a day doesn't mean much to me. Saying there are 8 bulk boxes in my one walmart hometown of ~25,000 is easy for me to understand.

your clays powder i think i saw some at cabella's in canada here on the weekend but as everywhere else powder so very scarce here too! i've been trying to find hogdgon benchmark, H335, and Varget and luckily couple weeks ago i snagged the last 2 bottles of varget that night that were put on shelves that same night... now tried finding imr 4198 and no luck! settled on shipping a bottle of hogdgon h4198 across canada and paid almost double!!! I hear this major shortage has to do with Obama's rules laws and how they are being distributed but don't crucify me on that because that was just what I heard. and trying to find sierra .458 300's are impossible up here too... to say the least between my .223 and dad's 1895 guide gun and reloading supplies it's a pain in the ass... I'm rationalizing the varget to say the least

For you Colorado people. The last time I was home 9mm was hard to find, most places. But the ACE Hardware in Limon had a large supply of that, and most other things, at "normal" prices. Checking the small towns in eastern Colorado could be worth your time, if you happen to be going that way.

I noticed the Academy in Waco is slowly building up some 22LR. There were several different kinds there for two days in a row. Still out of my favorite, the CCI 36 grain Mini Mag.

Wades Eastside Guns and the Bellevue Indoor Range in Bellevue, WA has a crap ton of 36gr mini mag. But they charge premium prices for it.

I was able to snag 1100 rounds of .22 LR for about $0.07/round off Armslist. Usually sellers are around $0.10/round.

Why do I feel like I got a bargain, and got screwed both at the same time?

Cabelas in north Denver has a fair selection of 22 long rifle in stock. Saw some CCI Stingers and some Remington.

I can get any caliber I have ever known walmart to carry at walmart now pretty much anytime I check. Both expensive and cheap loads. Except 22LR. It has been like that around here for months. What continues to surprise me is how far behind 22lr lags. I have not seen a bulk pack on the shelf for under $30 since Newton.

I can remember walking into my walmart in 2011 sometime and seeing the entire bottom shelf of the ammo cabinet packed with Federal bulk red box and thinking I should buy it all and hold onto it. I guarantee you when this cools off I will increase y 22lr stash significantly. Maybe to 20K.
Can I purchase a pallet from Graf and Sons with a C&R discount?

is exactly why 22lr is lagging behind. So many are perpetuating the shortage because when they see it they're going to "never be caught without again".

I too recently have seen every caliber except 22lr on the shelf at Walmart, however 22lr is there you just have to know when to look.

Yep. Proud of doing my part. I had enough for a decent year of shooting as I didn't expect a shortage to go longer. Started rationing just in case and still have a better supply than most, but I won't be forced to ration again!!!
I can probably make it through this year without buying anymore with the amount I am shooting now.
