Savage suggestion?
Hello all, I plan on buying my first hunting rifle within a week or two and have a quick question.
I plan to hunt deer mostly, with the occasional elk or moose hunt thrown in, so I'm pretty set on a 30-06. My price range is up to about $500, maybe $600if there's a really good reason. Due to my price range and hearing good things, I was looking at the Savage rifles, and I found one at a local shop for $380. It's a Savage 10FXP3 with an Accutrigger. Basically I just want your judgement on this rifle, or any suggestions on a better rifle for around or below $500. |

30-06 is always a good choice for all around use. The problem is that the 10FXP3 is a variation of the model 10, which is a short action and not available in 30-06. Could it be 111FXP3?
In general, I'd recommend staying away from most packages that come with a scope bundled from the gun maker. The scopes tend to be cheap, and your hunt depends on the reliability of your scope. I have lots of inexpensive scopes; on my "range toys". My hunting guns OTOH get GOOD scopes. I'd recommend that you look at a Marlin XL7 with a Leupold VX2 scope. Another contender, in addition to the Savage, would be the Howa 1500 / Weatherby Vanguard (same gun sold by different people). |

Odd, maybe it was miss-labeled. Thanks for the advice

You can't find a better rifle for the money than that Savage. The 30.06 is a good choice too. As mentioned, if that rifle is a combo package rifle, the scope and rings that come with it are junk. The rifle is great, but just know that you'll need to replace both the rings and scope before your first hunting trip.

+2 on Savage. Do what i did. Buy gun sell scope and mounts and use the money for a better scope package. everything sells on Craigs list and e-bay. Or trade it in on a different one.

111FXP3? That's my go-to hunting rifle. I replaced the scope with a Weaver K6 and I'm extremely happy with the rifle. I took two whitetail deer with it this year and shoot it regularly. The last 100 yard group I shot with the rifle (this past Saturday) measured 0.683.
There's a lot to like in a .30-06. |

308 will kill anything in US except for big bears-it is a 95% 30-06.

Might check around for better price. I just sold a NIB 111 DB 30/06 for $285 on GunBroker last week. Not real happy about that but it was my starting price so no much I can say. From now until midsummer is the best time to look for a bigger caliber rifle like the 30/06.
