This is probably a very stupid question, but since I'm a little new to shotguns here it goes What is the difference between a sabot slug and a rifled slug?

A sabot round has a sabot usually plastic the slug is smaller that the bore and the slug is inside a plastic sleave (sabot) to fill the bore. the object being to use a lighter slug thus a faster slug. In the case of a rifled slug the slug has the rifling instead of the barrel having the rifleing. rifled slugs are generally used in smooth bore shotguns. and the sabot in the rifled barrel but not limited to it. using a rifled slug in a rifled barrel is gilding the lilly.

How well do rifled slugs in smoothbores do compared to slugs in rifled barrels?

Rifled slugs were designed for smooth bore barrels,thus the rifleing the barrel is without.Sabot slugs need the rifleing to properly spin the sabot to keep it stable in flight and release the plastic sabot cover.You will find that sabot slugs do not work well in smooth non-rifled barrels.
