Glock 18 Revisited

I was over on GlockTalk a few minutes ago (Yeah, I know. But I needed some humor for a diversion

)

Anyway, there was a thread on the G18. I did a 'Search' and found that you guys are wrong! (Tongue firmly planted in cheek)

G18's aren't very rare. It seems that many on GT have fired this gun. At firearms training classes, at their local dealer, etc. They are also very controlable, and shoot with a 3-round burst, and are the ultimate CQB gun, and the guys over there play WAAAY too many video games

You do know your IQ drops by 10 points each time you visit Glocktalk. Anyways, though most people at that site have NEVER shot a REAL Glock 18. Instead they fire the Glock 17 that has been converted to selectfire. The way you can tell the real one is that the converted versions have the selector lever on the back of the slide and the real versions have it on the left side of the slide.

Yep, you don't see many of the real ones. In the late 80's I was lucky to be in an indoor pistol range across
the street from S.L.E.D. with my G17 when the reps from Glock arrived to demonstrate G's to South Carolina LEOs.

Glocks were illegal to sell in SC at the time, so I got everybodies attention quick.
I explained that I had just moved from Miami and they invited me to fire everything they had.
The G18 was my favorite. A real pussycat one handed. I'll shoot a real G18 anytime someone gives me the chance

Why were Glocks illegal in South Carolina?

The way I uderstood it is that they classified it a Saturday Night Special due to it's high composite content.
It was legal for me to own one as long as I didn't purchase it in SC. This classification has changed.

I've never heard of Glocks being banned in SC. I presume this was before SLED adopted the Glock 22/23 as the duty weapon, immediately upon its introduction.

Call it what you like - in 1988 no SC gun store could have or sell any GLOCK to any person.
As I said, the rules changed after SLED received their order and they became legal to sell.

In 1968 South Carolina imposed a new "melting point" law that banned guns of low quality metals that would melt at a relatively low temperature. This was an effort to get "saturday night specials" out of criminal's hands. This law eventually included polymer framed pistols like Glock. On July 10, 1989 Glock was added to the list of acceptable firearms in South Carolina, as well as other polymer pistols. No BS...
