UMC Ammunition...any good?
I was looking throught the Dunhams ad today and they have UMC ammo for 9mm for $54.99, .38 special for $79.99, .45ACP for $99.99, and .223 for $119.99, all for 250 round boxes.
I usually buy Winchester White Box for my .45 and 9mm, and Magtech for my .38. I will probably switch to WWB for that too or look for some LSWC-HP like suggested for SD loads. How does UMC stack up against WWB? Is this a good deal/ It sure seems like it is, but I have never fired a single round of UMC so I haven't got a clue. Thanks. |

I've used it a number of times and don't recall any problems.

Wally's didn't have any WWB so I went to Bass Pro and picked up some UMC .380 ammo. I ran it thru my LCP with no problems.

I use UMC stuff often for practice and a source of cases to reload. I've never had any problems with any of the stuff I used, but I will admit I've only used their handgun ammunition so far. I'm betting their rifle ammo is just as good though.

Filthy, extremely weak, lots of guns don't like it.

My 1935 Beretta does not like it very much at all.
I received a couple of boxes for free, and thought I'd use it for some sight compensating activity. After about 12 rounds, UMC ammo had left enough "junk" that the next round will not chamber properly (hangs up in the ramp). Cleaned things out, and it fired okay for about another dozen rounds, then repeated the malfunction. Then again, the gun's a 65 year old piece that may have some inherent "issues" of its own... If I was smart, I'd put the thing in a display case and leave it at that... |

I find that UMC is a bit sub-par to WWB. It is not that much cheaper but dirtier.

Okay, no UMC for me I guess. I just thought wow that is a good price. But not if it means less rounds fired before cleaning.

I've used quite a bit of it - rifle and pistol. It functions fine but, as others have said, it quite dirty. I wouldn't pass it up if it's on sale for a decent price, or the only ammo available in a caliber I need, but it would not be my first choice if something else is available at a reasonable price.

Practice
I have used it in my .380 just for practice it worked great but seemed a little on the dirty side. I guess the price made it worth it.

UMC is all I use for plinking, as far as dirty goes, it's the cleanest thing for that price. I have also never had a hiccup with it.

It's dirty, but as practice ammo, it works fine.

UMC
UMC-ammo. I believe that stands for "Union Metallic Cartridge". When I was in the gun business it was marketed by Remington. And it was made in Mexico. Then imported to the US.
The ammo was normally pretty good stuff. However it was inconsistent from lot to lot. Dirty powder, but then I clean my firarms, so that is not a big deal. Tom. |
