I have been reading that the .45Acp 230 RN penetrates 26" of the stuff. This sounds like something that would be handy in working up loads for HD. Where can a guy get or make some? How is it used and from what range?

Not sure where to get that stuff. But, Duct Seal has also been used to test bullet performance.
This can be bought at an Electrical or Sheetmetal Supply House. Comes in blocks and is normally used as a weatherseal putty. Shoot into it and cut it open along the bullet path. Some people also use wet newsprint. |

Ballistic Gelatin is difficult to make, and difficult to work with properly.
Duct seal is one alternative that comes close to matching gelatin, is a LOT less expensive in the long run, and can be reused. ------------------ Want to talk to TFL members about non-firearms topics? Then come on over to The Range House. |

Inexpensive gelatin and easy instructions
In the latest volume of the Wound Ballistics Review (published by IWBA) they mention a new source for gelatin. They say that the FBI has been successufully using it. It costs 1/3 the price of the gelatin from Kind and Knox, which is what everyone's been using. At 1/3 the price, it should be around $3 something or $4 a lb. I don't know what the minimum order size is or shipping costs -- I haven't called the number they gave yet. The company is call Vyse and the number is (847) 678-4780. The only drawback they mention is that it is slightly less clear.
For easy to follow, step by step instructions, I recommend going here: http://www.firearmstactical.com/tact...2/article1.htm . Shawn has some great info on the rest of his site too. Good luck if you decide to pursue this, and let us know how it goes.
