maybe the bear researchers are correct about more and more attacks happening right before it is time to hibernate since they need a bellyfull which isn't always easy?

Case in point

The bear always seems to be defending cubs. The bear was probably hungry and was going to eat the damn mutt, chihuau, or whatever was in the yard that disturbed her when she was gonna get some mcdonald scraps from the trash. It might've not even been a female.

Well from talking to a few of the locals the bear in the OP was a known boar who had not been a problem until then. He kept himself clear and avoided people until this attack.
