Little help, please

I did a search in here on Thompsons and found alot of useful information.
The information on getting your tax stamp is very nice.

Back to a semi-auto pistol caliber rifle. I really don't need full auto but I do need a pistol cal. rifle. Double and triple taps work pretty good for me in a rifle, .223 Ar.

So I add 4 to 4.5 lbs. to my rifle and go to .45 acp. I'm thinking I'll be in business. For the games I like to play.

I'm looking at the Kahrs, Auto Ordnance M1A1's . The only real problems I've read about, are the mags falling out, with a GI mag catch replacement seemingly fixing this problem.

Also I've read about replacing most of the internals with GI parts.
Do the Kahr reproductions stay with original mil specs.? Or was someone talking about a NFA Thompson?

I'm thinking even if you could swap out all the parts, you couldn't swap the bolt, right? Isn't a full auto bolt a machine gun? Or is that just the M-16 bolt?

Then again, thinking about, if I could spring 8 grand, I most likely would "need" a F/A Thompson.

Sounds like, for your needs, you should consider a Carbine Conversion Unit. Filed strip your .45, slip the frame into the CCU, and have your pistol caliber carbine. Mine runs 100%, but is slightly awkward compaired to my F/A Thompson - but one heck of a lot cheaper!

You have a good advice Sleuth. I have looked at the conversions.
If I go that way, I'll get one to fit a Glock so I can run hi-caps.
That is what I'm really looking for, 16"bbl semi-auto with hi capacity magazines.
We can't get 20 or 30 round mags for a HK USC, the Mech. conversion is limited to $60 plus for 15 to 20 round handgun mags. The Ruger PC carbine is also limited.
I may have to look in to an Ar conversion again. Try to find someone that can build a good one and will stand behind there work. It's a nice advantage to be able to run off 30 rnd without changing mags.

Then the prices; Auto Oradnance M1A1 $930 [Retail]
HK USC [10 rd. mag] $1050+" "
Mech Tech Conv. 1911 $315+
Ruger PC $560+

The price of the Mech Unit looks really nice up there against the others. I see here that it is only listed for 9mm for a glock frame.[Aug. Blue Press] That happens to be something I'd have to get. I only have a .40 frame. Another $500 on top. Plus the $60+ for high caps. I have 5 for the .40.

More research needed here.

The .45 conversion for an AR type rifle is about $500 from Olympic.

Works nice, I really like mine.

I have no idea about the FA parts in a semi Thompson...

Don't think it would be legal to convert your semi to full anymore.

The other route of buying a Thompson would be better or a registered M-16 that you can convert to other calibers.

I'm just woundering if some or a large majority of parts are interchangable with GI parts.

Rock, Have you changed anything around in the lower that you run you .45 upper on? Pistol cal. hammer or recoil buffer?
