Forming 270 win from 30-06

Dumb question for Reloading Gurus,

I hear Lapua are good quality cases. They sell 30-06 cases
but not 270 win (which I need).

How do you make 270 cases out of 30-06, and will they be any good?

According to the measurements given in Barnes, there are some slight variance in head size (the '06 shows as being a couple three thousands larger) even though the .270 is "based" on the 30/06. Given this, it would still be a bit of work to do the conversion. First the cases would need to be annealed (softened) so they could be run through a .270 die. I don't know if this can be done in one step or if it will need to go through an interim die to keep from neck/shoulder collapse. Once the neck/shoulder is reduced the neck will need to be inside turned as it will have thickened during the sizing process. Then trimmed to length. The .270 is slightly longer then the '06 , but the sizing "should" lengthen it enough.
Don't know if it would be worth it of not.

It's simple, and thousands of reloaders have done it for decades. I dunno I would bother just to use Lapua cases, but I did it when .30-06 brass was cheap and plentiful and .270 brass was scarce and expensive.

The only real difference between the two cases is that .270 is very slightly longer. This just means that it'll be a while before you need to trim the reformed cases.

All the conversion takes is full length resizing in the .270 sizing die. No annealing needed. I do trim just enough to square the case mouths up.

I'm guessing you meant full length sizing in a 270 sizer not a 30-06 sizer.

I have done 100's like this with no problems, just make sure they're in a container marked 270.

Back in the 70's I had and reloaded for a 270. Most of my brass was military 30-06. Believe it or not...The 30-06 brass was more accurate than the factory 270.

Haven't converted 30-06 to 270, but have converted 270 to 30-06. I had no trouble, just full length sized in a 30-06 die. I did not have to aneal the cases, but have only fired them once since converting

when i first started reloading i started with 357 and 44 mag then when i got into the rifle reloading i read some place about making 25/06 brass from 30/06 at that time i did not see anything about reaming the neck so i just run the 30/06 case into the 25/06 die loaded it and fired it(with no problem) since then one of my friend who has reloaded a lot longer then i have asked me if i reamed the cases i told him i did not he told me i was lucky and that i must have a larger then normal chamber in my remington 700 bdl all i cam say is if i went down to 25 cal. with no problems it should work for a 270 just make sure you use a safe starting load
