Spotting Scopes

Can anyone recommend a brand/type of spotting scope for the range. Took the Winchester 38-55 out to the range last Saturday and had to walk down 100 yards to see what damage I had done. In fact, I couldn't see the holes at 50 yards. I'm looking at a Redfield and a Bushnell variable power 25-60x.

Re: Spotting Scopes

I have a Barska one that I bought for less than $100 on amazon. Can't remember the actual model. Works good for our range which is a 300 yard one. Zooms from 20-60x, includes a tripod, and focuses nicely. I'd recommend it.

We had a problem with a shooting friend's scope fogging up last Saturday but, it was rainy and humid. I've heard of that brand but didn't know anything about them. That's why I went looking for familiar brands. I knew the Leopold was going to be an arm and leg and it was.

Had the same problem seeing targets a couple years ago so I bought a Bushnell. It came in a case, has a cheap tripod, and cost right around $100. It has and is serving it's purpose but in hindsight I wish I would have gotten something better. There have been times when the sun is just right that I have problems seeing 243 holes at 100 yards, yet with my friends Vortex 10X binoculars I can see them fine. Something for you to ponder

Re: Spotting Scopes

I too have the inexpensive Bariska 20-60. I can see my .204 holes at 400 yards. I've looked through others spotting scopes that have mainline brands and just go, "Whoa!" Their clarity is so superior it's hard to even make a comparison. But the Bariska gets the job I need done and the price is great.

Regards,
Andrew

PS. The eye relief on the Bariska stinks. I had to take off my glasses to get my eye close enough to get the full field of view. But I've made a little adapter that lets me view the image on my phone's screen, so the eye relief isn't an issue.

I went with the Redfield. I knew they made good rifle scopes and have for decades. Maybe their spotting scope will live up to their rifle scopes.

I have a Leupold Green Ring. It is a 15 - 45x.

Many of the $300 - $500 spotter will be good enough for target shooting to 300 yards.

If you want to get serious, Pentax and Nikon make some good spotters, but they are $1000 + to get started. . .
